Consultant in Stroke Medicine – the Great Western Hospital is pleased to offer the opportunity to join our experienced Stroke Medicine team. You could be a newly qualified consultant seeking a supportive and caring stroke service, or a seasoned consultant looking for a new and exciting change.

Our team is committed to delivering the very best care to patients and their families. We welcome applicants with experience in Stroke, GIM, Stroke or Neurology backgrounds.

The successful candidate will work closely with the existing team of consultants and will be responsible for contributing to the improvement of our stroke pathways and SSNAP performance.

Responsibilities

  • Multidisciplinary team working, including regular MDT discussions with colleagues.
  • Provide evidence‑based care for patients in a multidisciplinary setting.
  • Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care (with secretarial support).
  • Develop subspecialty interests aligned with Division needs and the Trust’s strategic direction.
  • Teaching, examination, and accreditation duties, and contribution to undergraduate, post‑graduate, and continuing medical education activities.
  • Provide cover for consultant colleagues during leave periods, in accordance with Trust policy.
  • Participation in clinical audit and continuing medical education.
  • Perform suitable duties in emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
  • Participate in an out‑of‑hours consultant rota.
  • Oversee and support junior colleagues, including direct supervision and departmental/trust‑wide teaching programmes.
  • Investigate and report on incidents, and participate in clinical risk management.
  • Support the Clinical Lead in policy and strategy development as a senior member of the Division Management Team.
  • Assist in cost‑effective utilisation of resources, including pay and non‑pay items such as equipment and drugs, within budgets.
  • Work within the Trust’s framework for Clinical Governance and Risk, developing clinical policies and adhering to standing orders and financial procedures.
  • Ensure effective communication and involvement of staff across the Division and support the Divisional Director to achieve objectives.
  • Work in partnership with colleagues in other Divisions within the Trust.
  • Represent and embody the STAR values and NHS Constitution principles in decision‑making.
