The unit operates as a combined ICU/HDU with 12 single side‑room beds, each equipped for full ICU care. It features modern multifunctional monitoring, state‑of‑the‑art ventilators, natural light, and a paperless environment supported by an integrated critical care information system (CIS). The unit performs mechanical ventilation, percutaneous tracheostomy, cardiac output monitoring, non‑invasive ventilation, and haemofiltration. It is enrolled in the Intensive Care National Audit and Research Council (ICNARC) case mix programme and is supported by a matron‑led outreach team.

In‑hours duties:

  • Provide care, support and rehabilitation for critically ill patients admitted to the Critical Care Unit.
  • Conduct daily review of all patients and participate in consultant‑led ward rounds.
  • Respond to the medical emergency team (MET) during hospital emergencies.
  • Accept referrals from the Emergency Department and other hospital sites, reviewing patients with support from the nurse‑led outreach team.
  • Admit and manage patients admitted to the Critical Care Unit under consultant supervision.

Out‑of‑hours duties:

  • Participate in the full overnight shift rota while in Critical Care.
  • Receive additional payments for out‑of‑hours and night on‑call hours.
