A Speech and Language Therapy Assistant providing therapy to children with a range of speech, language or communication delays. Children are assessed by the Therapist and goals will be set. The Assistant carries out the weekly therapy, working directly with the child, supporting the parents and occasionally liaising with nursery or school.

The Assistant has weekly supervision with the Therapist who reviews progress and advises on future targets. The clinic offers a highly supportive environment, with peer supervision as well as weekly formal supervision and reflection. The Assistant is supported to complete weekly case notes, document progress and provide homework activities to families.

We work with a range of children, with simple speech sound delays, lack of spoken words, autistic spectrum difficulties and Learning Disabilities, including Down Syndrome. We use formal language activities at the table-top, as well as play-based therapy using parachutes and puppets on the floor. We follow a Total Communication approach, including Makaton signing, Objects of Reference and Intensive Interaction. Full training will be provided.

We are looking for people who would enjoy hands-on work with young children, including delivering therapy to children with significant communication delay and Complex Special Needs. Strong communication skills are required, including the ability to explain language development and therapy concepts to families (after training). Experience with young children is essential, including general play skills and managing behaviour.

Enthusiasm, interest in the subject, warmth and interpersonal skills outweigh formal job experience; we are looking for the right person who loves spending time with small children and is enthusiastic about communication development.
