About this job:

Please note this is not a Swansea city council job. You will be working with a private client who received direct payments. A little about myself: I am a young person living with my family in Swansea. I am diagnosed with ASD and ADHD, and I am non‑verbal, so I rely on consistent support from those around me to meet my daily care needs. I enjoy spending time outdoors, especially going for long walks in open, calm spaces such as parks, beaches, and quiet pathways. When out in the community, I like to link arms with my carer for reassurance. Sudden loud noises, for example, motorbikes or heavy traffic can startle me, so I benefit from a calm, patient approach when this happens. Busy or crowded environments can be overwhelming, so I use ear defenders to help me feel more comfortable. I need prompting and support to use the toilet, and I require access to disabled facilities. Hand dryers can be frightening for me, so gentle planning around this is important. At home, I love gaming and enjoy spending time on my iPad, especially playing puzzle and problem‑solving games.

Essential responsibilities:

  • Have a good awareness and understanding of neurodivergence, including ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
  • Support in crowded or loud environments by calmly guiding to a quieter, safer space when needed.
  • Offer extra processing time and gentle reminders when crossing busy roads and during busy moments.
  • Provide consistent, calm, and reassuring support during moments of overwhelm or distress.
  • Link arms with me during community outings to help me feel safe and grounded.
  • Ensure I can continue walking and contact my parents for guidance if something is forgotten at home.
  • Maintain a supportive approach, using distraction and redirection to manage behaviours.
  • Respect and maintain privacy and confidentiality.
  • Be dependable: arrive on time, communicate any issues, and maintain a friendly, easy‑going manner.
  • Be adaptable and flexible while supporting me without taking over.
  • Maintain business insurance on the car used for client outings.

Desirable qualities:

  • Build trust through empathy, patience, and genuine connection.
  • Understand the importance of consistency and kindness.
  • Support me with community outings to places I enjoy, such as parks and beaches.
  • Encourage independence outside of family and school environments.
  • Provide support for activities I enjoy, such as gaming or puzzles.

Additional information:

A trial period of six months will be necessary. Salary will be paid monthly with annual leave calculated pro rata. A DBS must be processed prior to commencement; costs will be met by Swansea Council where eligible. Jobs are provided by the Find a Job Service from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
