About this job

As a Mental Health Nurse in the Iris Ward at Peasley Cross Hospital, you will provide high‑standard assessment and treatment for male patients with a wide range of mental health conditions. The role requires passion, empathy, strong communication and excellent teamwork to support people living with mental illness and to improve patient outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the care of service users by carrying out assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation under the Care Programme Approach and line‑manager supervision.
  • Develop and maintain individual care plans that meet each service user’s assessed needs, ensuring that unqualified staff deliver care in line with the plan.
  • Liaise with family members, carers and significant others during assessment and care‑plan development.
  • Create and implement risk‑management plans, informing all relevant parties and ensuring appropriate action.
  • Direct unqualified staff to maintain high‑standard care delivery.
  • Participate in setting evidence‑based care standards and in systematic monitoring and evaluation of service users under supervisor guidance.
  • Communicate effectively with multidisciplinary team members to share relevant information affecting the service user’s care.
  • Use verbal and non‑verbal communication skills to convey sensitive information and check understanding, especially in cases of distress, psychiatric symptoms or language barriers.
  • Apply knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act and related legislation to support service users and their carers when an admission is made.
  • Ensure service user rights under the Mental Health Act are clearly communicated and outcomes documented.
  • Provide and coordinate therapeutic activities for service users, monitoring effectiveness.
  • Safely administer medication in accordance with Trust policies, procedures and the Nursing & Midwifery Council regulations.
