About this job

Radiation Protection Technician / Health Physics Monitor PAYE Contract (33 days paid leave) or Umbrella. 10‑hour days shift rotation (10 on / 4 off). Location: Hinckley Point C, Somerset. This role supports NNB’s oversight and assurance arrangements for work with ionising radiation at the HPC construction site. Primarily this role supports the preparation and execution of industrial radiography on the site.

Responsibilities include:

  • Management of radioactive sources and equipment stored in a central store.
  • Independent confirmation that a radiography area has been established to the correct standards.
  • Routine radiation monitoring of the source store and around the barriers of the radiography area.
  • Support the independent oversight, supervision and monitoring of radiography, reducing risks to workers from unplanned events and potential delays to the construction schedule.
  • Frequent work on evenings, nights and weekends, and liaison with contractors to ensure safe and timely execution of the work.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Accompany radiography teams to ensure standards of work and barrier control are exercised: confirm barriers are erected per the barrier plan and equipment is operational, calibrated, and pre‑use checked.
  • Perform radiation monitoring at the barrier during exposure, ensuring barriers remain correctly placed.
  • Prior to handing the area back, verify work is complete and all sources and equipment have been removed.
  • Perform monitoring to support a radiological incident.
  • Manage the central source store supplied by NNB for storage of industrial radiography sources: receive new sources, register and log them; dispatch sources and complete paperwork; sign out and return sources, verifying necessary paperwork; perform periodic source inventory checks; conduct periodic radiation and contamination surveys of the store.
  • Liaise with the EDF NNB Approved Dosimetry Service for storage, issue and return of EDF NNB staff legal dosimetry.
  • Administer direct‑reading and alarming dosimeters, send for repair and calibration, and store to avoid damage.
  • Ensure RP instruments used by the independent RP team at the site are sent for repair and calibration, and are stored to avoid damage.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience:

  • Essential: GCSE grade C or equivalent in Maths and English.
  • Experience as a qualified Radiation Protection Technician / Health Physics Monitor within an organisation.
  • Working knowledge of the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17) as it applies to this role.
  • Desirable: nationally recognised Level 2 qualification in Radiological Protection / Health Physics Monitoring (e.g. City and Guilds Stage 1, NVQ Level 2 Diploma, Level 2 Underpinning Knowledge Certificate).
  • Experience performing radiation monitoring during radiography work, working on a nuclear licensed site, managing inventories of instruments, radioactive sources and other radiological protection equipment.
  • Previous appointment as a Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS).
