An exciting opportunity has arisen to recruit a permanent, part‑time Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our Pathology Specimen Reception team, based at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
Key Responsibilities
- Support scientific staff in receipt, data entry and pre‑analytic preparation of patient samples
- Prepare chemical solutions, maintain stocks of consumable items, dispose of chemical and/or biological waste
- Maintain and decontaminate complex laboratory equipment
- Assist with all aspects of patient sample preparation and laboratory workflow as part of a diagnostic service team
Qualifications & Requirements
- Good level of secondary education with English, Maths and Science to GCSE grade 9‑4 (or equivalent)
- Previous experience in a NHS clinical laboratory or analytical techniques is an advantage but not essential
- Full training will be provided
- Self‑motivated, conscientious, organised with good attention to detail and ability to remain calm in stressful situations
- Excellent communication and observation skills, enjoys working as part of a team
- Looking for a long‑term career as a Medical Laboratory Assistant (not a trainee Biomedical Scientist)
Working hours & flexibility
The role is for 30 hours a week (Monday‑Friday) and requires availability between 07:00 and 21:00. You will be required to support a 7‑day working rota that will include out‑of‑hours work such as evenings, nights, weekends and bank/public holidays, according to service needs. Flexibility is therefore an essential part of this role.
