The following are the core responsibilities of the Healthcare Assistant. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks, this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels.
- Assisting healthcare professionals in providing high-quality patient care.
- Conducting new patient health checks, measurements, and routine tests.
- Supporting patients with various healthcare needs, such as dressing changes, wound care, compression bandaging, ECGs, working within your scope of practice.
- Ear irrigation if trained under the supervision of the Practice Nurse, and support the Practice Nurse with the management of chronic disease clinics.
- When trained, administer B12 injections.
- Maintaining accurate patient records and assisting with administrative tasks as required.
- Upholding infection control standards and ensuring a clean and safe environment for patients.
- Carry out BMI checks as directed.
- Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transport.
- Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session.
- Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisation's IPC policy.
- Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate, working within your scope of practice.
