This is a Band 8c Annex 21 development post. We are offering this role as a Band 8c Consultant Radiographer (Annex 21) development post, in line with NHS Agenda for Change. The post holder must hold a BSc (Hons) in Radiography (or equivalent), be HCPC registered, and possess a Post graduate Award in Mammography (or equivalent). They will either already hold, be working towards, or be required to undertake a full MSc in Advanced Mammography Practice. Completion of the full MSc is essential for progression to independent practice as a Responsible Assessor.
Where the successful candidate does not yet meet all requirements, a structured development plan will be provided. During the Annex 21, if all modules are not already completed, we will support you to undertake the remaining MSc modules and develop advanced clinical skills under supervision. This includes progression through key modules, demonstrating autonomous practice, and meeting competency and governance standards. Progression to the full Band 8c Consultant Radiographer role will occur upon completion of the full MSc (including dissertation), demonstration of competence across all four pillars of Consultant Practice, independent practice as a Responsible Assessor, and formal sign off. The length of the Annex 21 period will depend on the successful applicant’s existing experience, skills and qualifications. This will be agreed following interview along with a detailed development and progression framework.
Due to the nature of the work, mammography posts have a gender protected character. This is a genuine occupational requirement and as a result this post is exempt under Schedule 9; Part1 of the Equality Act 2010 and, therefore, only female applicants should apply.
The post-holder will be expected to provide and facilitate an expert level of care in breast imaging services. They will exercise the highest degree of professional autonomy enabling and embedding values based practice across pathways, services, organisations and systems, working in partnership with individuals and teams. This extends beyond developing expertise in professional practice and independent decision‑making within complex and unpredictable contexts. They will demonstrate expertise and evidence informed practice.
Work collaboratively with colleagues delivering a seamless continuity of service for the NHS Breast Screening Programme and symptomatic breast services at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust. Liaise with colleagues regarding annual leave and during times of increased workload, ensuring clinical workload commitments are covered to maintain continuity of service in both the screening and symptomatic services.
Our Poppy’s Promise Commitment
We believe that compassionate care sits at the heart of everything we do. Every member of our team — clinical or non‑clinical — plays a vital role in ensuring that patients, families, and colleagues are treated with dignity, empathy, and respect at all times. We expect all staff to demonstrate compassion not only through their words, but through their actions: by listening attentively, communicating clearly and kindly, and recognising individual needs, feelings, and circumstances of those in our care. Effective communication is central to safe and high quality healthcare. We value colleagues who take the time to understand others, explaining information in a meaningful way, and responding to concerns with patience and understanding. By joining our team, you are committing to uphold these values — ensuring that every patient feels heard, respected, and valued, and that compassion is embedded in every interaction, every day.
For full duties and responsibilities please refer to the attached document entitled Candidate Job Pack. This is a structured development post with progression from Band 7 to Band 8a and ultimately Band 8c. The post‑holder will begin at Band 7 while undertaking the required MSc modules and developing advanced clinical skills under supervision. Progression to Band 8a will occur once all key MSc modules (excluding the dissertation) are completed and the individual demonstrates autonomous practice and meets agreed competency and governance standards. Progression to Band 8c will only be achieved on completion of the full MSc, including the dissertation, with demonstrated competence across all four pillars of Consultant Practice, independent practice as a Responsible Assessor, and formal sign‑off as an 8c Consultant Radiographer.
