This is a newly created Consultant Psychiatrist post within two category C prisons (HMP Erlestoke and HMP Guys Marsh). The role involves assessment and management of complex mental health conditions, delivering rehabilitation and ensuring high‐quality care within prison settings.
The role will involve a work pattern of 2 days at HMP Erlestoke and 2 days at HMP Guys Marsh, with 2.5 SPA allocated for teaching, training, clinical management, governance, service development and other relevant activities.
Key Responsibilities- Provide clinical leadership to the Mental Health In‐reach Teams at both HMP Erlestoke and HMP Guys Marsh.
- Assess, review and formulate management plans for prisoners, integrating with multidisciplinary teams and personalised care plans.
- Lead or actively participate in MDT meetings and service improvement initiatives.
- Maintain Section 12(2) approval for Mental Health Act assessments and transfers.
- Coordinate with external services for CPAs, aftercare plans, hospital transfers, and statutory agencies (Mappa, police, probation).
- Provide expert clinical advice and guidance for individuals with complex mental states and risk.
- Advocate for necessary resources and staffing.
- Engage in clinical governance, audit, and medical advisory committee work.
- Support continuing professional development and participate in CPD programmes.
- Qualified Consultant Psychiatrist with experience in forensic or general adult psychiatry, learning disability psychiatry, or addiction psychiatry.
- Eligibility for specialist register in Forensic Psychiatry, General Adult Psychiatry, Learning Disability Psychiatry or Addictions Psychiatry.
- Experience working within secure or inpatient mental health settings is preferred.
- Strong interpersonal and team‐working skills with the ability to work across multiple sites.
- Commitment to trauma‐informed care and rehabilitation frameworks.
