Assistant Technical Officers provide pharmacy technical services across the Trust, working independently but referring to supervising pharmacy technicians or pharmacists when required. They support extended services and contribute to dispensing and medication management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist pharmacy technicians and pharmacists in providing broad pharmacy services.
  • Carry out labelling and dispensing of medicines under supervision.
  • Perform inpatient dispensing, controlled drug dispensing, recycling and return of medicines, routine supply, and medication management for both inpatients and outpatients.
  • Use bar-code technology and automated dispensing systems for manual and computerized dispensing.
  • Operate within local standard operating procedures and participate in quality assurance.
  • Reception duties: receive prescriptions, enter details onto the pharmacy tracker system, filing, photocopying, and scanning as required.
  • Fill bottles, bags and sundry items, manage stock rotation, and store items in appropriate locations.
  • Answer telephone for routine enquiries and refer non-routine matters.
  • Record dispensing details for unlicensed and named patient medicines according to protocols.
  • Document legal requirements for controlled drugs and EDS medicines, including completion of necessary paperwork.
  • Participate in education and training programmes to maintain high-quality pharmacy service.

Qualifications

  • Level 2 NVQ in Pharmacy Services Skills or equivalent, with relevant underpinning knowledge.
  • Four GCSEs (including Maths, English and a Science subject).
  • Good communication and organisational skills.
  • Flexibility and ability to work well under pressure.
  • Desirable: experience in hospital pharmacy (not essential).
