Liaise with pharmacy, protocol and consultant regarding suitability for cancer treatment. Authorise prescription chart accordingly. Assess toxicities with a view to dose adjustments for future treatments in liaison with consultant and pharmacy. Liaise with pharmacy regarding obtaining chemotherapy drugs in a timely manner. Liaise with receptionist for appropriate booking time for patients considering the above. Organise investigations for patients and review results seeking advice as appropriate to assist with treatment decisions. Schedule meetings relevant to the service.
Communications and Key Working Relationships
- Assess patients and administer chemotherapy and supportive treatments in accordance with agreed protocols.
- Establish and maintain effective communication with patients and carers.
- Provide information to patients and their families regarding the treatments being administered.
- Involve patients and carers in the planning and delivery of services within The Cancer Care Suite.
- Provide efficient phlebotomy and cannulation.
- Care of central venous catheters reflecting evidence based practice.
- Provide scalp cooling therapy to patients suitable and wishing for this treatment.
- Provide a telephone and emergency service for patients experiencing complications of chemotherapy/cancer.
- Perform observations on patients and take appropriate action on any abnormalities as a result of treatment in accordance with policies/protocols.
- Ensure patient records are maintained and that documentation reflects care provided.
- Participate in patient and public involvement activities.
- Support people’s equality, diversity and rights.
- Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies to ensure patient needs are met.
Responsibility for Finance
- Manage use of physical and financial resources effectively and efficiently and have responsibility to the Head of Nursing/ Lead Chemotherapy Nurse for making recommendations for purchase, regarding supplies of equipment based on specialist knowledge.
- Manage financial resources, ensuring balanced financial budgets within own areas of responsibility.

- Participate in IPR/PDP process.
- Maintain own professional development as detailed in annual IPR/PDP.
- Attend mandatory training as per Trust policy.
- Maintain up to date knowledge and skills by attending relevant conferences and developing an awareness of changing practice by networking with other professionals and accessing most recent literature.
- Access clinical supervision for personal and professional development.
- Maintain a professional portfolio by collecting evidence of personal development through reflective practice.
