Overview

Do you want to help shape how data is governed across one of the UK's largest and most complex organisations?

As a Data Governance Manager, you'll join the Chief Data Office (CDO) at the heart of DWP's data transformation, helping to drive forward how we manage, protect and use data to deliver better services for millions of people.

This is an exciting time to join.

Our 2030 Data Strategy is already underway, alongside the introduction of a new Data Hub and Spoke model.

You'll play a key role in turning strategy into reality, working across the organisation to embed strong governance, improve data quality and ensure we use data safely, ethically and effectively.

If you enjoy working with stakeholders, solving complex problems, and influencing how an organisation uses its data, this role offers real scope and impact.

The scale of what we do is extraordinary, and our purpose is unique.

We'd love you to join us.

Responsibilities

Working at the centre of DWP's data governance activity within the Chief Data Office, you will support the rollout of our Data Strategy and help build a consistent, effective approach to how data is managed across the organisation.

Your work will span a wide range of governance priorities, including designing and implementing our Data Governance Framework, supporting Data Governance Boards, contributing to the rollout of our Data Ownership and Stewardship model, improving how we measure and manage data quality, ensuring data is reliable, trusted, and fit for use, providing guidance on data governance standards, supporting compliance with data protection legislation, contributing to cross-government data initiatives, and potentially being involved in emerging areas such as data ethics and governance for AI.

As part of a flexible job family, you will have the opportunity to work across different areas of data governance over time, such as specialising in Data Quality or Data Sharing, or developing as a generalist across multiple domains.

Your work will directly support better decision‑making and improved outcomes for citizens, making a genuine difference at scale.

Qualifications

  • Experience working in a data governance role, including putting governance frameworks or practices into action and understanding data protection rules.
  • Experience advising teams on how to manage and use data properly, while building strong working relationships across different areas.
  • Ability to explain complex or technical data topics in a clear, simple way to non‑technical audiences.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills, with experience working through uncertainty, understanding complex information, and identifying and communicating data risks.

Benefits and Work-Life Balance

  • Wages: competitive pay up to £44,447.
  • Pension: employer contributions worth 28.97%, amounting to £11,232 per year.
  • Holidays: generous leave package starting at 24 days and rising to 26 days after one year, plus up to 3 extra days off per month on flexi‑time.

You also get all the usual public holidays.

Location: You'll join us in one of our digital hubs in Blackpool, Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle or Sheffield, whichever is most convenient for you.
