The full-time post is 40 hours plus 1:8 on-call commitment. Day shifts are 08:00-18:00, long days 08:00-20:30 and night shifts 20:00-08:30. An indicative weekly rota is shown in the job description along with more detail of the position.
The period of induction and assessment will see the post-holder in theatres and critical care. After an initial assessment, the post-holder is contracted to provide out of hours/emergency cover in accordance with the agreed rota. The rota is anticipated to be 1:8.
During the fixed sessions per week, the post-holder will provide anaesthetic cover for operating lists as specified on the weekly rota or as otherwise requested by the lead consultant or their deputy. The post-holder will cover lists alone or with a consultant anaesthetist. If working with a consultant, the post-holder will be supervised by, and follow the instructions of, the consultant. If working alone, the post-holder will seek the guidance of the duty consultant when clinically indicated.
Providing anaesthetic cover for operating lists includes the prescription of post-operative analgesia, anti-emetics, intravenous fluids and oxygen as appropriate. The post-holder is expected to take account of any relevant protocols or guidelines issued within the department when arriving at clinical decisions.
In exceptional emergencies or unforeseen circumstances, the Doctor would be expected to be available outside normal duties to ensure continuity of patient care.
