About this job

Do you want to help shape how data is governed across one of the UK's largest and most complex organisations? As a Data Governance Manager, you'll join the Chief Data Office (CDO) at the heart of DWP's data transformation helping to drive forward how we manage, protect and use data to deliver better services for millions of people. This is an exciting time to join. Our 2030 Data Strategy is already underway, alongside the introduction of a new Data Hub and Spoke model. You’ll play a key role in turning strategy into reality, working across the organisation to embed strong governance, improve data quality and ensure we use data safely, ethically and effectively. If you enjoy working with stakeholders, solving complex problems, and influencing how an organisation uses its data, this role offers real scope and impact. The scale of what we do is extraordinary, and our purpose is unique. We’d love you to join us.

Key responsibilities

  • You will work at the centre of DWP’s data governance activity within the Chief Data Office, supporting the rollout of our Data Strategy and helping to build a consistent, effective approach to how data is managed across the organisation.
  • Design and implement the Data Governance Framework.
  • Support Data Governance Boards and contribute to the rollout of our Data Ownership and Stewardship model.
  • Improve the measurement and management of data quality, ensuring data is reliable, trusted, and fit for use.
  • Offer guidance on data governance standards, support compliance with data protection legislation, and contribute to cross‑government data initiatives.
  • Engage in emerging areas such as data ethics and governance for AI.
  • Develop expertise across multiple domains, possibly specialising in Data Quality or Data Sharing.

What we’re looking for

  • Experience working in a data governance role, including putting governance frameworks or practices into action and understanding data protection rules.
  • Experience advising teams on how to manage and use data properly, while building strong working relationships across different areas.
  • Ability to explain complex or technical data topics in a clear, simple way to non‑technical audiences.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills, with experience working through uncertainty, understanding complex information, and identifying and communicating data risks.

What we offer

  • Wages: Competitive pay up to £44,447.
  • Pension: Employer contributions worth 28.97%, equating to £11,232 per year.
  • Holidays: 24 days starting, rising to 26 days after one year, plus up to 3 extra days off per month on flex‑time. Public holidays included.
  • Flexible working: Hybrid model with time at home and time at a digital hub.
  • Career development: Training, development opportunities and professional qualifications.
  • Benefits: Flexible hours, time off volunteering, discounts and savings, interest‑free loans, sports and social activities, coaching, mentoring and career progression opportunities.
  • Location: Choose a digital hub in Blackpool, Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle or Sheffield.
