About the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Evidential Property Officer within the Assets Department, Crime Standards and Justice. Based at Melksham, this part time (18.5 hours) role will require occasional travel between the other two divisional property stores at Salisbury and Swindon as needed. The team acts as custodians responsible for the management of all police evidentially seized property exhibits retained as part of a policing investigation.

Responsibilities

  • Safe handling of items relating to serious criminal offences, such as cash, drugs, weapons and forensic samples.
  • Process all incoming and outgoing exhibit items using police databases.
  • Make well‑informed decisions regarding the retention or disposal of property exhibits.
  • Promote the use of photographic images to reduce the volume of exhibits held across the three stores.
  • Apply legislation such as the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996 (CPIA) and Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE) to review longer‑term exhibits and dispose of them if required.
  • Provide appropriate and expert advice to police officers, police staff and members of the public on matters concerning property and CSI forensic exhibits.

Qualifications

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong organisational skills and a high degree of accuracy.
  • Problem‑solving ability and the capacity to work independently as well as within a team.
  • Previous experience working in a secure and confidential environment.
  • Proven administrative experience and experience dealing directly with the public.
  • Good time management and prioritisation skills to manage a demanding workload while meeting deadlines.
  • Understanding of confidentiality, GDPR, Data Protection and Freedom of Information issues.
