Responsibilities
- Provide a comprehensive service to consultants and specialty teams with minimal supervision.
- Organise personal workload and coordinate with other Medical Secretaries to ensure efficient service.
- Exercise initiative and maintain confidentiality at all times.
- Ensure cross‑cover working where possible.
- Manage and maintain 18‑week patient pathways, including tertiary referrals, and record accurately in the PAS system.
- Arrange follow‑up appointments in conjunction with the Referral to Treat (RTT) pathway.
- Support consultants with non‑clinical tasks: preparing presentation documents, arranging meetings, circulating agendas and supportive materials, and taking minutes.
- Inform appropriate personnel of consultant annual and study leave, and junior doctor leave as needed.
- Organise and maintain consultant admissions; cancel/add patients to the waiting list as appropriate and contact patients.
- Liaise with the anaesthetic department and ward teams.
- Complete and amend theatre lists.
- Book critical care beds and manage admissions from home.
- Type dictation from audio transcription of clinical correspondence and documentation.
- Maintain an effective track of inpatient referrals to ensure timely review.
- Review clinical letters to ensure appropriate follow‑up arrangements or investigations are in place, rectifying as necessary.
- Allocate and check the work of other staff.
Qualifications
- Proficiency with audio‑typing and word‑processing packages, holding a qualification of at least RSA Level 3/OCR typing/word‑processing or equivalent.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Desirable: possession of the AMSPAR certificate.
- Good interpersonal skills, friendly telephone manner, and pleasant disposition.
