We are looking for an experienced, hardworking team player to join us in the friendly Proton Beam Therapy team. This fixed‑term, 12‑month post requires 37.5 hours per week. It offers a solid induction package and opportunities for training and development with our specialist education team, Proton School, and Digital Clinical Placements. The role enjoys a high level of multidisciplinary working, collaborating closely with anaesthetics, nursing and physics teams.

Responsibilities

  • Provide professional, technical, operational and clinical leadership and support to radiographic staff across the service.
  • Advise on treatment delivery equipment, imaging and oncology management systems; act as an expert resource for clinical practice and support technical troubleshooting.
  • Troubleshoot patient care or technical issues within the designated area.
  • Supervise, instruct, and participate in treatment delivery and image‑guided radiotherapy, including complex calculations, CT scanning and virtual simulation.
  • Lead the development and implementation of evidence‑based clinical practice, in line with local and national initiatives, and facilitate changes in service delivery.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication links between the multidisciplinary team.
  • Maintain and improve competence levels through personal development and by supporting the training of junior staff.
  • Support the procurement, evaluation and introduction of new techniques, procedures and equipment.
  • Coordinate with medical physics and technical services to ensure routine servicing of equipment and timely fault reporting.
  • Assist in monitoring quality standards, participating in quality management and reviewing work instructions and operating procedures.
  • Initiate and manage patient and service complaints, failures and feedback.
  • Participate in extended shift system, bank holidays, weekend working and on‑call duties as required.

Supervisory & Managerial Responsibilities

  • Lead as a named on‑call supervisor and manage the on‑call service.
  • Act as an advocate for the facility at national forums and vendor meetings.
  • Support the recruitment and selection of staff through appointment panels and liaise with Human Resources.
  • Take part in managing performance, providing evidence for investigations or disciplinary processes, and ensuring discipline and capability policies are applied.
  • Work with other superintendents, principal radiographers and the radiotherapy manager to monitor work across the service and maintain professional standards.

Teaching & Training

  • Induct and train staff in radiotherapy, ensuring competencies and essential training are achieved.
  • Provide a portfolio of personal development reviews for junior staff.
  • Manage pre‑registration student training in line with trust and university policy.
  • Encourage staff participation in clinical audit and research projects.

Research

  • Lead or support research, development and implementation of new techniques and practices, evaluating results and impacts.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • HCPC registration is required.
  • Extensive experience with radiotherapy equipment and treatment techniques.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A commitment to personal and team development within the Proton Service.
