We have an exciting opportunity for a 10‑month secondment or fixed‑term position as an oncology dietitian to be part of a large dietetic department. You will be supported by dietetic managers and colleagues and will contribute to the overall dietetic service including student placements, audit, training and education.

At this world‑class cancer centre you will gain experience across a diverse range of cancer types and treatments, including specialist surgery, haematology, stem cell transplants, CAR‑T therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiotherapy (including proton beam therapy). You will also work with inpatients and outpatients, rotating through head and neck, HPB, gynaecology, and UGI outpatient services. Band 6 rotations focus on oncology‑related competencies and working within dedicated team areas will support your development in these skills.

You will acquire a strong foundation to develop as an oncology specialist. The successful candidate will have recent acute experience in oncology and advanced nutritional support skills (including enteral and ideally parenteral feeding), and excellent organisational and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Clinically responsible for the nutritional care and management of oncology patients and independently plan, organise and prioritise patient‑related and professional demands daily.
• Work as part of a rotational team and oversee a designated clinical area with support from the team lead.
• Provide education and training to medical staff, nursing staff and other health‑care professionals in the Trust.
• Support the service and contribute to the department’s annual objectives.
• Supervise and support learner dietitians.
• Plan, organise and prioritise patient-related and professional demands.
• Assess oncology patients nutritionally using anthropometric, biochemical, clinical and dietary data while considering social, ethnic circumstances, prognosis and treatment.
• Convey complex specialised dietary advice and lifestyle changes to patients and carers using advanced counselling and communication skills.
• Diagnose malnutrition and/or risk of refeeding syndrome and liaise with appropriate consultants to optimise treatment outcomes.
• Attend ward rounds and multidisciplinary meetings to provide expert advice on nutritional support for oncology patients and carers based on clinical evidence.
• Communicate and liaise with nursing staff, AHPs, catering and other health‑care professionals on implementing patient dietary prescriptions.
• Prescribe appropriate dietary regimens using evidence-based practice and manage, monitor and reassess treatment plans as necessary.
• Initiate, facilitate and coordinate the set‑up of home enteral feeding to ensure safe discharge.
• Refer patients to primary, secondary or tertiary care for monitoring and therapeutic support following transfer or discharge.
• Work with the catering department to provide suitable meals that meet the special needs of oncology patients in line with national standards.
• Write, deliver and evaluate internal and external education and training sessions on nutrition and specialist dietetics in oncology for staff, patients and carers.
• Act as a clinical educator in the ABC model of student dietetic placements.
• Take an active role in research, development, implementation and audit of departmental resources such as diet sheets, policies and standards, ensuring alignment with evidence‑based practice.
• Maintain accurate, comprehensive and up‑to‑date documentation on individual patients in line with local and national standards and confidentiality policies.
• Record and submit patient data and statistics for annual reports and service planning.
• Order, deliver and monitor specialist prescribable nutritional supplements for individual client needs.
• Attend and participate in departmental, professional and trust nutrition‑related meetings and lead them when required.
• Maintain own clinical professional development (CPD) to ensure best practice.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Recent acute experience in oncology.
• Advanced nutritional support skills, including enteral and ideally parenteral feeding.
• Excellent organisational and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a rotational team.
