Job Overview

Barhale is looking for a Managing Quantity Surveyor to support project delivery teams and senior management on commercial, cost and contract matters across a wide range of civil engineering projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide accurate and timely cost and value reporting at project and business unit levels to inform group reporting.
  • Prepare accurate cash flow reporting and manage cost forecasting.
  • Draft and update monthly CVRs, cost and commercial plans.
  • Compile upstream payment applications and manage cash management processes.
  • Lead subcontract procurement, negotiation, financial accounting and post‑contract management.
  • Prepare project payment applications for final account settlement.
  • Liaise with clients, client representatives and third parties on commercial issues, including contractual change, claims and additional payment.
  • Work with the wider project team to forecast predicted expenditure and cash recovery aligned with business expectations.
  • Share best practices and advise site teams on cost management and efficiencies.
  • Identify and realise commercial opportunities to protect the business from risks.
  • Effectively manage contract and subcontract agreements, primarily IChemE and NEC forms, ensuring alignment to corporate governance.
  • Ensure supply chain engagement with correct contract terms and maintain strong relationships.
  • Support internal commercial processes, ensuring adherence to timeframes and compliance.
  • Actively seek to improve processes and procedures.

Required Qualifications

  • Previous experience in the construction industry.
  • Familiarity with IChemE/NEC contract forms and Construction Law.
  • Previous experience in commercial management and procurement of subcontractors, including chairing meetings, measurement and control cycle and accrual calculations.
  • Demonstrable experience in monthly forecasting and cost analysis.
  • Excellent communication, numeric and computer literacy skills, proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent organisation and time‑management skills, with the ability to work effectively to tight deadlines.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Member of RICS or other relevant professional body, or working towards one.
  • HND/degree (or equivalent) in Quantity Surveying.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience in estimation.
  • Experience working for a direct‑delivery contractor.
  • Working towards a CSCS card.
