We are recruiting an Assistant Practitioner for our Children’s ADHD and Autism team (AAT) to provide waiting well support. The role involves managing the AAT waiting list and engaging with families during the period before treatment begins. It requires a proactive mindset, a focus on psychological safety, and the ability to communicate compassionately and effectively.
Key qualities:
- Experience in a health, care or youth service setting
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Awareness of safeguarding, trauma‑informed practice and community support systems
- Confidence in managing sensitive conversations and acting as a liaison between families and services
- Commitment to equity, engagement and improving service accessibility
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate waiting lists and act as the first point of contact for families and clinical teams.
- Conduct regular check‑ins, signpost families to resources or third‑sector organisations, and provide psycho‑education or self‑help materials to prevent deterioration while waiting.
- Facilitate navigation and support for families, including access to online resources, workshops or community‑based interventions while they await assessment or treatment.
- Support robust data collection and performance monitoring to improve resource allocation and identify bottlenecks in the system.
Qualifications:
- NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent
Knowledge and Expertise:
- Knowledge of child‑related legislation
- Ability to write, implement and evaluate treatment plans
- Knowledge of child protection workings and practice
- Working knowledge of specialist therapeutic approaches, e.g. cognitive behaviour therapy, and understanding of mental health issues
Experience:
- Experience working with adolescents and within settings relevant to adolescents with additional needs including mental health needs.
- Experience working in a team setting and with healthcare professionals/NHS.
- Experience working in a busy and demanding environment.
