Responsibilities

  • Process prescriptions according to practice procedures.
  • Issue paper and electronic prescriptions to dispensing and non‑dispensing patients in a timely manner.
  • Process requests for, and prepare, medication compliance aids.
  • Check and reconcile prescriptions, including post‑dated prescriptions.
  • Ensure all medicines and appliances dispensed are checked against the prescription and, when in doubt, verify with the prescribing doctor.
  • Collect all due prescription charges and ensure the patient declaration on the FP10 is filled and signed.
  • Record all financial transactions and process any monies received or handled on behalf of the practice.
  • Perform relevant checks (CDs, PA items, PPA return, expiry dates, fridge temperatures, etc.), check incoming stock against the invoice, and update stock control records.
  • Identify stock errors, report to the wholesaler, and re‑order items if necessary.
  • Promptly forward invoices and dispensary correspondence to the appropriate manager.
  • Act on drug alert bulletins and advise staff and patients as required.
  • Operate efficient stock control to ensure continuity of supply for patients and minimise wastage through out‑of‑date stock.
  • Store drugs in an appropriate manner in accordance with accompanying instructions.
  • Procure, store, dispense, and destroy controlled drugs safely and effectively.
  • Check all injectables and order as necessary.
  • Dispose of returned and out‑of‑date stock and controlled drugs with the appropriate officer for destruction.
  • Maintain refrigeration at the required temperature and keep a temperature control record.
  • Maintain accurate records of all dispensing transactions, incorporating computer use where available.
  • Keep shelves, work surfaces, and all dispensary equipment clean, hygienic, and in good working order.

Working conditions

  • Frequent, prolonged VDU use; time‑pressed environment; high levels of accuracy and attention to detail essential at all times; exposure to distressing situations and written material.
