The Locum SHO (CT1) in General Surgery will support the safe and effective management of surgical inpatients and emergency admissions. The postholder will work closely with registrars and consultants across general, colorectal, and upper GI surgery (depending on Trust structure).
Key Responsibilities
- Ward management: Daily review of surgical inpatients, documentation, ordering investigations, and implementing management plans.
- Clerking acute admissions: Assess and clerk emergency surgical patients from ED and AMU, including initial investigations and escalation.
- Theatre assistance: Assist in elective and emergency theatre lists under registrar/consultant supervision. Monitor post-op patients, manage complications, and advance concerns promptly.
- On-call duties: Participate in the general surgery on-call rota (nights/weekends depending on Trust).
- MDT collaboration: Work with anaesthetics, radiology, gastroenterology, and specialist nurses.
- Procedures: Perform cannulation, venepuncture, catheterisation, NG tube insertion, wound care, and basic suturing.
- Clinical governance: Attend teaching, contribute to audits, and participate in morbidity & mortality meetings.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- GMC full registration with licence to practise
- Minimum CT1-level experience in surgery or acute medicine
- Competence in basic medical and surgical procedures
- Experience managing acutely unwell patients
- ALS certification (or willingness to obtain)
Desirable Experience
- Previous experience in general surgery, colorectal, upper GI, or emergency surgery
- Basic suturing and wound management skills
- Experience with surgical clerking and peri-operative care
- Participation in audit, QI, or research
Skills & Competencies
- Strong clinical judgement and ability to elevate appropriately
- Excellent communication with patients, families, and MDT
- Ability to prioritise workload in a fast-paced surgical environment
- Commitment to high standards of documentation and patient safety
Work Schedule
- Full-time, typically 40 hours per week
- Mix of ward work, emergency admissions, and theatre
- On-call commitments depending on Trust rota
- ASAP start, initial contract 1–3 months with potential extension
