Ward 34 is a 29 bedded Acute Medical Ward in the Aintree site. Under the supervision and direction of a registered nurse, you will assist the Ward / Department team in providing the highest possible standard of basic care for patients and their families/carers. As a Band 2 Health Care Assistant, duties will include supporting the registered nursing teams in providing patient care, clinical duties such as assisting patients with personal hygiene, meeting nutritional needs, completing risk assessments and implementing care plans. We seek an enthusiastic and dynamic health care assistant who can demonstrate the trust values as part of our team. This is a full time job involving rotating and working days and night shifts. You will support all individuals through effective communication.

Responsibilities

  • General bed making/making up of clean beds in readiness for new admissions and operation beds, following policy for the care of mattresses and beds.
  • Clear and clean vacated bed spaces and prepare them ready for use according to the ward/unit protocol.
  • Prepare used linen bags for collection by porters and ensure adequate supply of linen bags/skips ready for use.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and safe environment in all areas.
  • Assist with collection of blood products from the laboratory as required.
  • Safely dispose of clinical waste and sharps as per Trust policy.
  • Be familiar with Trust policy and procedure for reporting clinical incidents and report incidents if they occur.
  • Provide support and assistance to new and junior members of staff.
  • Support members of the nursing team in managing abusive and aggressive behaviour with supervision.
  • Assist patients in meeting their hygiene needs and carry out all aspects of personal care and grooming (including emptying catheter bags).
  • Provide toileting support, ensuring privacy and dignity is maintained.
  • Support patients in managing incontinence.
  • Measure patients fluid intake and output using fluid balance charts and report to the registered nurse.
  • Prepare and serve patient meals, drinks and snacks; assist or feed patients as necessary.
  • Assist patients in completing menu forms and liaise with the Catering Department regarding meal requirements.
  • Report patients’ dietary intake as indicated in the food plan of care.
  • Perform movement and handling following safe practice guidelines and the patient’s manual handling plan.
  • Enable patients to maintain or improve mobility using exercise and mobility devices as directed by individual care plans.
  • Assist in the prevention of pressure sore development as directed by the registered nurse in conjunction with the patient’s care plan.
  • Obtain specimens from patients for ward or laboratory testing.
  • Escort patients to clinical departments within the hospital.
  • Assist registered nurses in performing basic life support techniques and provide assistance in prolonged resuscitation where required.
  • Ensure due regard is given to patients’ customs, values and spiritual beliefs.
