Duties for this post will include supporting the registered nursing teams in providing patient care, clinical duties such as assisting patients with personal hygiene needs, meeting patients' nutritional needs, maximising mobility, delivering pressure area care and falls risk prevention. This person needs to be driven and motivated to fit in with the team and strive to provide the highest standards of care for our complex respiratory patients.
Band 2 roles will not be eligible for sponsorship as these roles do not meet the required skill level (RQF 3 or A level and above). Salary range is £22,383 to £23,615. Opportunities have arisen within Respiratory Ward 6C for a Band 2 Health Care Assistant. We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic health care assistant who can demonstrate the trust values to join our team. Previous experience working in a health-care environment is essential, respiratory experience desirable. Excellent communication skills and IT skills are required and the successful candidate should demonstrate a commitment to delivering excellent patient care.
Care Duties:
- Assist patients in meeting their hygiene needs and carry out all aspects of personal care and grooming (including emptying catheter bags).
- Provide toileting support, ensuring privacy and dignity, and assist patients in managing incontinence.
- Measure patients' fluid intake and output using fluid balance charts and report information to the registered nurse.
- Prepare and serve patients' meals, drinks and snacks; assist or feed patients as necessary.
- Assist patients in completing menu forms and liaise with the Catering Department regarding the number of meals needed.
- Report patients' dietary intake as indicated in the personal care plan.
- Carry out movement and handling within the safe practice guidelines from mandatory training and in relation to the patient's manual handling plan.
- Enable patients to maintain or improve their mobility using exercise and mobility appliances as directed by individual care plans.
- Assist in preventing pressure sore development as directed by the registered nurse in conjunction with the patient’s care plan.
- Obtain specimens from patients for ward or laboratory testing.
- Escort patients to clinical departments within the hospital.
- Assist the registered nurse in performing last-offices.
- Provide general observations of patients and report anything untoward to registered nursing staff.
- Initiate Basic Life Support techniques as appropriate and provide assistance to the registered nurse during prolonged resuscitation situations.
- Ensure due regard is given to the customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients and carers.
General Duties:
- Support all individuals through effective communication.
- Prepare beds in readiness for new admissions and operation beds, following policy for bed and mattress care.
- Clear and clean vacated bed spaces and prepare them for use according to ward/unit protocol.
- Prepare used linen bags for collection by porters and ensure an adequate supply of linen bags/skips.
- Assist in maintaining a clean and safe environment throughout the ward.
- Collect blood products from the laboratory as required.
- Dispose of clinical waste and sharps safely, in accordance with Trust policy.
- Familiarise yourself with the Trust policy and procedure for reporting clinical incidents.
- Provide support and assistance to new and junior staff members.
- Contribute to health, safety and security of individuals.
- Undertake clerical duties in the absence of or in support of the ward clerk.
- Act as messenger when another more appropriate person is unavailable, e.g. to other wards, the laboratory or medical engineering.
- Complete maintenance repair forms.
- Follow all policies and procedures of the organisation.

- Educational qualification: RQF Level 3 (A level or above).
