A vacancy has arisen for a Clinical Coding Auditor to work within the Clinical Coding Department at Liverpool NHS Foundation Trust. The department is based across three sites – Aintree, Broadgreen and the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. The successful applicant will generally be based at the Aintree site but may be required to travel across sites. A hybrid working policy is in place, allowing for flexible and agile working, including two days per week from home.

The Role

  • Provide robust audit and management practices and systems to support the Clinical Coding department in delivering its strategic objectives.
  • Organise and undertake complex internal and external audits of clinical coding data.
  • Undertake clinical coding audits at the levels of Trust, Department and individual clinical coding officer.
  • Organise all aspects of external audits in a manner consistent with the Audit Commission and/or NHS Digital Guidelines.
  • Produce formal audit reports within agreed timescales and make recommendations on how to improve clinical coding quality and accuracy.
  • Deliver feedback from audits and provide training to coding and clinical staff as required.
  • Carry out at least one trust-wide internal audit of 200 FCEs per year in accordance with NHS Digital guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with the Senior Manager to provide expertise within the audit service area.
  • Have responsibility for Trust-wide audits, making independent decisions at an appropriate level.
  • Collaborate with Senior Managers, clinicians and team members on a number of audits.
  • Undertake clinical coding audits at the levels of Trust, Department and individual coding officer, using the latest version of the national NHS Digital Clinical Coding Audit Methodology.
  • Develop and track the progress of audit plans.
  • Identify and manage risks and issues within the service, including the development and implementation of contingency plans.
  • Work collaboratively with other service areas to ensure successful service delivery.
  • Support the successful delivery of key outputs and benefits of the service to support service improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure appropriate plans, documentation and procedures are in place.
  • Attend meetings as necessary, report progress and resolve issues.
  • Make routine presentations covering complex issues to groups on topics associated with programmes/projects, and demonstrate systems to users when necessary.
  • Assist other departmental managers and colleagues by providing specialist advice or support when appropriate.
  • Work with divisions and management to develop KPIs to support their objectives.
  • Use external data sources for benchmarking or audit information as required.
  • Organise and undertake complex internal and external audits of clinical coding data.
  • Organise all aspects of external audits in a manner consistent with the Audit Commission and/or Connecting for Health Guidelines.
  • Produce formal audit reports within agreed timescales and recommend improvements to clinical coding quality and accuracy.
  • Carry out at least one trust-wide internal audit of 200 FCEs per year in accordance with Connecting for Health guidelines.
  • Undertake regular routine internal audits of clinical coding and all aspects of the coding function to ensure high quality data and that the team shows high skill in both classification systems.
  • Maintain ACC and audit status as required by NHS classification service.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of national policy developments, particularly the SUS (Secondary User Service) timescales.
  • Act as a signatory and order goods/services as required.

Performance Management

  • Participate in developing Key Performance Indicators within the audit/coding service.
  • Monitor and manage delivery against these targets and produce regular management update reports detailing performance levels and actions taken to resolve situations and achieve progress.
  • Liaise with others to ensure they are briefed on service achievements.
  • Work to achieve agreed service objectives within broad professional policies and on one's own initiative.
  • Provide full support for internal and external audits and act on recommendations as appropriate.
  • Dedicate the required concentration to collate, analyse, check and report on information, while coping with ongoing audit issues and interruptions.
  • Work within protocols and contribute towards their ongoing development.

Education and Training Development

  • Support and mentor others within the team.
  • Provide coding training to staff via feedback from completed audits.
