Litigation solicitor (Hybrid) – Swindon, £43.53ph

Min 1 day a week office attendance on a Wednesday plus other dates depending on business needs

Responsibilities

  • Provide a comprehensive legal service, legal advice and documentation and assistance to members, officers and other clients of the Legal Department on complex and high profile matters involving Civil and Commercial Litigation, Regulatory Enforcement, Licensing and Employment.
  • Manage a wide ranging varied caseload and complex legal work.
  • Provide professional support and mentoring to less experienced colleagues and oversee effective completion as required.
  • Supply high quality legal advice generally, including complex cases, advising whether cases should be brought or defended before any Courts and Tribunals and on the manner of conduct.
  • Act as advocate and represent the Client at the Magistrates Court, County Court and Employment Tribunal.
  • Work autonomously, prioritising caseload to meet deadlines and agreed timeframes, avoiding unnecessary delays and increased cost.
  • Draft, negotiate and complete complex legal documentation.
  • Give legal advice and resolve legal matters for Officers (at all levels) and/or Members as required, including decisions on complex and high profile transactions of significant financial value with far reaching implications.
  • Advise on any matters including legal and policy related issues, appear at Courts or other Tribunals, and make important decisions on conduct of matters dealt with by the post holder.
  • Attend and give advice to Cabinet or other Committees, Sub‑Committees or Working Parties at public meetings or in closed sessions, establishing good working relationships with other departments and outside agencies.
  • Keep updated and implement new legislation, case law, codes of practice and policy relating to relevant areas of work; undertake minimum training hours required by the post holder’s professional qualification annually; inform clients of significant developments by providing guidance and training to client departments and junior staff.
  • Develop new templates for legal documentation, liaising with client departments and providing updates on work and latest legal and policy developments.
  • Contribute towards the development of the team.
  • Carry out other duties appropriate to the level of responsibility of the post as required by the Principal Solicitor or Chief Legal Officer.
  • Promote the development and maintenance of the highest professional standards throughout the work and service of the Client and conduct professional work in accordance with the codes set by the Legal Services Team.

This is a full time role on a temporary contract basis.
