Senior Chemotherapy Nurse | Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

We are recruiting a Senior Chemotherapy Nurse, looking for somebody to work 30 hours per week, primarily Monday through Friday (including Bank Holidays). The successful candidate will bring expert knowledge in systemic anti‑cancer therapy (SACT), ensuring safe administration of treatment, adherence to national guidelines, and high standards of infection control. Working as part of the Macmillan Chemotherapy Nursing Team to provide a comprehensive and caring service for patients undergoing treatments for cancer, incorporating planning, implementing and evaluating a programme of holistic care.

This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term basis as it has been established to provide maternity cover and will end in 12 months or when the substantive post holder returns. Whilst this post is advertised on an acting / secondment basis there is the potential that this post may become permanent in the future.

You will be administering chemotherapy and supportive treatments utilising excellent cannulation skills and providing support and advice to patients and their families. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced chemotherapy nurse to help shape the future of a growing specialist service.

Duties and responsibilities include:

• Providing clinical leadership, support, and mentorship to the junior nursing team, helping to build a safe and positive learning environment.
• Working with the wider multidisciplinary team to support service development, audits, and quality improvement.
• Recognising patients’ changing needs throughout their cancer journey and liaising with appropriate members of the multidisciplinary team for referral to relevant services.
• Working with other agencies to provide input in determining the most appropriate course of action for individual patients undergoing cancer treatment.
• Assisting in data collection as appropriate.

Review blood results; liaise with pharmacy, protocol and consultant regarding suitability for cancer treatment. Authorise prescription chart accordingly. Assess toxicities with a view to dose adjustments for future treatments in liaison with consultant and pharmacy. Liaise with pharmacy regarding obtaining chemotherapy drugs in a timely manner. Liaise with receptionist for appropriate booking time for patients considering the above. Organise investigations for patients and review results seeking advice as appropriate to assist with treatment decisions. Schedule meetings relevant to the service.

Assess patients and administer chemotherapy and supportive treatments in accordance with agreed protocols. Establish and maintain effective communication with patients and carers. Provide information to patients and their families regarding the treatments being administered. Involve patients and carers in the planning and delivery of services within The Cancer Care Suite. Provide efficient phlebotomy and cannulation. Care of central venous catheters reflecting evidence based practice. Provide scalp cooling therapy to patients suitable and wishing for this treatment. Provide a telephone and emergency service for patients experiencing complications of chemotherapy/cancer. Perform observations on patients and take appropriate action on any abnormalities as a result of treatment in accordance with policies/protocols. Ensure patient records are maintained and that documentation reflects care provided. Participate in patient and public involvement activities. Support people’s equality, diversity and rights. Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies to ensure patient needs are met.

Manage use of physical and financial resources effectively and efficiently and have responsibility to the Head of Nursing/ Lead Chemotherapy Nurse for making recommendations for purchase, regarding supplies of equipment based on specialist knowledge. Manage financial resources, ensuring balanced financial budgets within own areas of responsibility.

Participate in IPR/PDP process. Maintain own professional development as detailed in annual IPR/PDP. Attend mandatory training as per Trust policy. Maintain up to date knowledge and skills by attending relevant conferences and developing an awareness of changing practice by networking with other professionals and accessing most recent literature. Access clinical supervision for personal and professional development. Maintain a professional portfolio by collecting evidence of personal development through reflective practice. Be a specialist resource and support for junior members of staff by displaying a role‑modeling attitude.

Fulfil a proactive role towards the management of risk in all actions. Conduct risk assessments of all situations, take appropriate actions and report all incidents, near misses and hazards, and fulfil statutory duty of care for own personal safety and that of others.

Provide support, information, education and training to meet the needs of all grades of health professionals, patients, relatives and carers within the speciality. Undertake formal presentations externally and internally to the Trust, including presentation at national conferences and universities. Collaborate with other disciplines to ensure a patient‑pathway approach to education. Promote health education by assessing patient needs and negotiating individual programmes of care to suit their lifestyle. Ensure compliance with mandatory training and PREP requirements, maintaining records of training and development undertaken. Assist in audit and monitoring of standards of care, agreeing improvement plans, providing input into benchmarking. Understand implications of the Data Protection Act, The Caldicott Guidelines and the Human Rights Act. Ensure Trust Policies are adhered to and assist clinical team if information required from specific data collected for audit purposes.

Participate in Macmillan Service Reviews to drive service improvement. Ensure patients are aware that they are interfacing with a Macmillan professional and know the full range of resources and services available through Macmillan. Actively engage with Macmillan Cancer support to contribute expertise and experience and support the Macmillan strategy.
