The Environmental Health Housing team plays a vital role in improving the conditions of privately rented homes within our area. We are looking for dedicated individuals who want to improve the quality of the private rental sector by working with landlords and tenants to raise property standards and management practices, ensuring people are safeguarded from poor practices and can live in safe, well‑conditioned homes.
The team is being expanded to cover new duties following the introduction of the Renters Rights Act, including dealing with harassment, illegal eviction and enforcement of new tenancy rules. Responding to complaints from tenants and other professionals, you will undertake investigations, inspections, gather evidence and advise landlords and tenants on their obligations, rights and duties. You will be expected to offer advice, guidance and undertake enforcement action where appropriate.
As a district officer you will perform general private sector housing enforcement under the Housing Act, including licensing of Houses of Multiple Occupation, caravan site licensing and other public health duties. We are looking for candidates with experience of property inspections/building knowledge and/or experience of building enforcement cases. The ideal candidates will be used to working with landlords, letting agents, stakeholders and occupiers to achieve compliance. Experience of investigatory practice, effective case management and preparing enforcement files for prosecution or tribunal would be advantageous.
