A vacant full-time position as a Highly Specialised Clinical Physiologist – Cardiac Devices at Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The role is based in Whiston Hospital and requires flexible work across all MWL sites.
Qualifications
- Registered as a Physiologist with the Royal College of Clinical Physiologists (RCCP).
- Post‑graduate qualification in a specialised area of clinical physiology.
- Sufficient years of post‑qualification experience.
- Excellent communication skills, flexibility and the ability to work as part of a team.
Key Duties
- Provides fully comprehensive, unsupervised reports of a highly professional standard in a range of procedures.
- Uses clinical judgements to act on reports in an unsupervised way.
- Has highly specialised knowledge and skill in at least one specialist area and is responsible for the development and delivery of that service.
- Clinical supervision of testing in this area.
- Developing and implementing relevant policies and procedures.
- Producing costs for each procedure.
- Implementing staff training programs for all levels of staff.
- Peer evaluation of competency levels.
- Stock control and consumable costs in this area.
- Maintain optimal functioning and regular servicing of equipment.
- Initiation of research and audit programs in order to review services and to monitor capacity.
- Provide regular updates to manager on service progress and re‑design.
- A commitment to setting up new services and expanding the Physiologist role into areas traditionally covered by doctors.
- Deputise for other service leads in their absence.
- Participate in out of hours sessions when required.
- May be called upon to participate in a 24hr on call emergency rota covering a range of invasive and non‑invasive tests.
- During out of hours or on call sessions, together with clinical responsibilities, the Physiologist will take on a level of managerial control of departmental issues.
- Take on a level of managerial control as designated by the manager.
Clinical & Professional Responsibilities
- Deliver clinical skills and knowledge unsupervised across a wide range of basic and specialised clinical procedures.
- Be proficient in a range of invasive and non‑invasive cardiac procedures.
- Provide high quality care for patients.
- Required to deliver complex information and instruction in a sensitive manner considering the diverse needs of all patients regardless of their age and abilities.
- Required on a regular basis to communicate information concerning patients and their test results, giving advice and recommendations to a wide range of staff groups.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Ensure the accuracy of data quality in line with departmental policies and procedures.
Teaching & Training Responsibilities
- Design and implement training and education programmes in own specialist area.
- Assist with the delivery of education programs in a broad range of subjects to a variety of staff throughout the Trust.
- Actively participate in the mentorship arrangement and take an active interest in liaising with higher education institutions providing teaching and placements when required.
Other Responsibilities
- Assist with the provision of Cardio‑Respiratory services throughout the Trust and partnership agencies and ensure the delivery of a high standard of service for both routine and emergency work.
- Provide highly specialised supervision of a particular area within that service.
- Continuously consolidate and expand skills by formal and informal means, continually updating knowledge in line with local and national policy.
- Commitment to participation in relevant societies and local and national groups and committees.
