An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Health Care Assistant to join our Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) in ward 5C. Whiston Hospital Ward 5C is a 32-bed ward located on the 5th floor of the main Whiston Hospital site. Half of the ward (16 beds) is the Hyper-acute Stroke Unit (HASU) where patients are cared for in the first 72 hours following a stroke. The other half of the ward is the HASU Step Down unit.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake personal care duties for patients, including personal hygiene, feeding assistance, and toileting, under supervision from registered healthcare practitioners.
  • Record patients’ personal care information in accordance with local and trust policies.
  • Work with all members of the multi-disciplinary team to deliver safe, high quality compassionate, person-centred care.
  • Assist with patient moving and handling, and use patient equipment such as hoists and wheelchairs safely.
  • Support patients’ feeding, diet and nutritional needs; accurately record nutritional intake and fluid intake and output and report changes to nursing staff.
  • Maintain patient property as per Trust policy and manage supplies, ordering them when necessary.
  • Demonstrate ward routines to new staff and contribute to the learning environment.
  • Communicate compassionately and effectively with individuals, families, carers, and healthcare practitioners while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Observe, assess, and respond to personal care patients’ needs, escalating concerns as required.
  • Work within agreed ways of working, following Trust standards, policies, and protocols.
  • Follow duty of care principles, acting in the best interest of individuals to prevent harm.
  • Participate in team handovers.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Experience as a Health Care Assistant or in a similar role is desirable.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Commitment to maintaining professional knowledge and participating in appraisal and development activities.
  • Knowledge or experience working within an acute care or stroke setting is an advantage.
