About the Role
TeacherActive is delighted to be working with a popular college in South Birmingham to recruit a dedicated and motivated Lecturer in English (Adult Skills) on an hourly-paid basis. You will deliver engaging teaching across Functional Skills English, GCSE English, and related adult programmes, supporting learners from diverse backgrounds and helping them achieve life-changing outcomes. This role involves flexible delivery hours and the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to an outstanding Adult Skills provision.
Role Purpose
Your core responsibility will be to deliver high-quality, inclusive teaching and learning in English for adult learners. You will work collaboratively with colleagues across the Adult Skills area, contribute to curriculum development, and uphold the College’s strong commitment to quality, sustainability, and learner success.
Key Responsibilities
- Teaching & Learning
- Deliver high-quality Functional Skills English, GCSE English, and related adult programmes
- Plan and deliver engaging lessons that support learner progress and achievement
- Embed English, Maths, sustainability themes, and wider skills throughout delivery
- Maintain an inclusive learning environment reflective of the College’s Ready, Respect, Safe commitment
- Assessment & Quality
- Mark and assess learner work in line with awarding body requirements
- Provide clear, constructive feedback to learners
- Contribute to internal quality assurance and continuous improvement processes
- Support the development of high standards across all English programmes
- Administration & Compliance
- Maintain accurate registers, records, and statistical returns
- Attend team meetings and standardisation sessions as required
- Complete mandatory training including Safeguarding and Prevent
- Adhere to all College policies, including Data Protection, Health & Safety, EDI, and sustainability commitments
- Professionalism & Development
- Demonstrate commitment to ongoing professional development
- Contribute to curriculum development and adult learning initiatives
- Champion equality, diversity, inclusion, and anti-racist practice
- Support the College’s ambition to achieve Sustainable Net Zero by 2030
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Essential
- A relevant subject or professional qualification
- Minimum Level 3 in English
- Minimum Level 2 in Maths
- A Level 5 Teaching Qualification (or willingness to work towards one)
- Proven knowledge of English subject content
- The ability to teach effectively at the required levels
- Strong administrative and IT skills
- Ability to work well within a team
- Commitment to Safeguarding, Prevent, and Equality, Diversity & Inclusion
- An understanding of the needs of diverse adult learners
Desirable
- Assessor Award qualification
- Experience teaching English in adult, FE, or community settings
- Experience with remote/online delivery
- Curriculum development experience
- Industry or professional experience relevant to English or adult education
- An understanding of sustainability in the FE curriculum
