Responsibilities
- Perform aquatic ecological surveys, including identification of macroinvertebrates, algae, fish, freshwater habitat, and salt marshes.
- Analyze samples in the laboratory, including macroinvertebrates to mixed taxon level and algae.
- Deploy and monitor sondes, interpret ecological and chemical data.
- Prepare and write reports used to inform and influence partners, support regulation and enforcement.
- Support incident response to pollution, flooding, waste and drought.
- Coordinate monitoring programme, schedule surveys, and maintain quality‑controlled data.
- Engage in team working, participate in staff training and cross‑disciplinary response activities.
- Perform physical tasks such as manoeuvring boats and equipment and walking on uneven ground.
Qualifications
- Valid driving licence.
- Ecological technical degree, or sufficient relevant freshwater ecology experience.
- Foundation in freshwater species identification, microscopy, dichotomous keys, environmental investigation, and field survey methods for macroinvertebrates, plants, fish and habitat.
- Planning and conducting surveys, populating databases, data interpretation, reporting and effective communication.
- Teamwork, initiative, organisation and adaptability to changing priorities.
- Understanding of risk assessments and health‑safety procedures.
- Training will be provided in river habitat survey, freshwater macroinvertebrate and plant identification.
- Advantage: hydroacoustic survey and boat driving experience, data visualisation and water‑quality statistical skills.
