Role: Occupational Therapist (Children) – 6 month locum contract with possible extension. Salary: £35 per hour. Location: Manchester. Full time hours preferred; part time also considered.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess the needs of children/young people with complex and specialist needs in the home environment, considering the needs of parents/carers.
  • Complete risk assessments if risks within the home cannot be reduced to a reasonable level.
  • Carry out manual handling assessments within the community and minimise handling risk to children/young people, parents and informal carers.
  • Adhere to and apply the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct for Occupational Therapists (Royal College of Occupational Therapy).
  • Independently manage a complex caseload in consultation with the Manager.
  • Provide advice on disability management to children/young people, parents and carers, offering equipment and recommending long‑term intervention, including major adaptations, in accordance with local authority policy and guidelines.
  • Work in partnership with children/young people, parents and carers to determine the most appropriate intervention to meet assessed needs and maximise independence.
  • Liaise, negotiate and work jointly with other teams and agencies involved in organising and providing services.
  • Maintain accurate and concise documentation consistent with legal and organisational requirements.
  • Provide advice and information to children/young people with low‑level needs and redirect to other services as appropriate.
  • Support, guide and train new staff, students and other teams to increase awareness of OT in the community.
  • Contribute to team development activities and projects.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree in Occupational Therapy.
  • HCPC registered.
  • Experience working with children, preferably in community settings.
  • Experience undertaking formal moving and handling assessments.
  • Two years' experience post qualification.
  • Understanding of the general organisation of Local Authorities.
  • Knowledge of the Local Authority's legal responsibility towards children/young people with disabilities living in the community.
