The Children’s service supports children, young people and their families through a progressive universal model of service delivery based on assessed need. The role is part of the Healthy Child programme and works in partnership with other agencies to achieve good health outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Health Visitor in their work with children and families, helping each identified child achieve its full potential.
  • Contribute to family health needs assessment and plan interventions in agreement with the Health Visitor.
  • Carry out developmental health reviews and provide routine advice on child care, development, feeding, behaviour management, play, hygiene, dental care, accident prevention, attachment, parenting skills and local community facilities.
  • Provide care in varied settings including clients’ homes, Children Centres, GP surgery and health centres.
  • Participate in Public Health work and community development activities in line with the Public Health Agenda.
  • Work collaboratively with the team to promote the health and wellbeing of children aged 0‑19 and their families.
  • Follow local and national child safeguarding procedures and attend conferences/core groups with the Health Visitor as required.

Managerial Responsibilities

  • Manage own allocation workload supervised by the Team Manager and/or Health Visitor/School Health.
  • Organise work, assess and plan while considering priorities such as home visits and parenting groups.
  • Implement and evaluate individual programmes of care as agreed with Health Visitors.
  • Update Health Visitors on progress and significant changes related to children and families.

Education & Development

  • Maintain and improve professional knowledge and competence through reflective practice, formal and informal education, and evidence‑based practice.
  • Undertake educational courses, mandatory training and additional training identified through appraisal and service objectives.
  • Update skills and knowledge to maintain fitness for practice.
  • Deliver group health promotion sessions in various settings, e.g., parenting groups, mother and toddlers, in agreement with the Health Visitor.

Research & Audit

  • Work within and implement clinical governance guidelines, policies, protocols and procedures.
  • Contribute to the appraisal process and identify professional objectives and personal development plans.
  • Engage in clinical and management supervision as per organisation policy.
  • Identify and report accidents/incidents in appropriate documentation.
  • Manage complaints from clients and colleagues as per policy.
  • Manage risk, health and safety and adhere to organisational policies.
  • Work as a lone worker following the Lone‑worker Policy and guidelines.
  • Participate in audits and practice development projects within the team and Trust wide.
  • Collaborate with IT and Informatics initiatives to utilise information systems.
  • Contribute to evidence collection and maintenance for Care Quality Commission outcomes.

Communication

  • Establish good communication networks with clients, families, carers, statutory and voluntary agencies and colleagues.
  • Liaise with professionals ensuring appropriate channels of communication are developed and maintained.
  • Communicate childcare and child‑centred information empathetically and reassuringly, assisting parents in overcoming language and disability barriers.
  • Organise appointments for contacts and invitation to groups.
  • Record client information contemporaneously in documentation, ensuring clarity and conciseness.
  • Occasionally work in environments with emotive and distressing situations such as aggressive clients or families dealing with newly diagnosed disabilities.
  • Occasionally handle difficult family situations involving child protection, family breakdown, mental health, behavioural problems.
