Royal Mail is recruiting for an Automation Maintenance Technician in Chester West Employment Park, Chester, CH1 4PA. The role is a pool position covering early, late, and night shifts with a standard day shift of 06:00‑14:30, Monday to Friday.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure availability and performance of automation assets through effective maintenance procedures.
  • Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance tasks.
  • Engage in continuous improvement activities and projects, from conception to implementation ownership.
  • Provide support to the Engineering Manager, Maintenance Team Leader, and Engineering Team Coaches, completing end‑of‑shift reports, fault logging and data entry.
  • Identify root causes of automation breakdowns and prioritize corrective actions to meet operational processing requirements.
  • Monitor equipment performance and collaborate with operational stakeholders to improve automation outputs.
  • Work independently and as part of a team to achieve common goals.

Qualifications

  • Qualified in electrical and mechanical engineering (minimum ONC Electrical Engineering or NVQ Level 3 – or equivalent).
  • Experience maintaining automation equipment, ideally PLCs.
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety legislation.
  • Full UK driving licence (required for occasional travel to other sites).
  • Strong communication skills and ability to explain complex issues effectively.

Benefits and Compensation

  • £51,051 per annum, plus night shift allowance.
  • 22.5 days annual leave with bank holidays and a defined contribution pension scheme.
  • Weekend supplements: £51 per Saturday attendance and £102 per Sunday attendance.
  • Potential welcome bonus of £1,500 (subject to terms and conditions).

Working Hours & Shifts

  • Standard day shift: Monday to Friday, 06:00‑14:30.
  • Early shifts: Monday–Friday 06:30‑14:10; Saturday 06:30‑18:30 (may vary to 10:00‑22:00); Sunday 06:40‑19:00.
  • Late shifts: Monday–Friday 14:00‑21:59; Sunday 19:00‑06:40; Monday–Friday 21:45‑06:40.
  • Night shifts include Sunday 19:00‑06:40.
  • Shift rotation system requires flexibility; voluntary overtime and shift pattern flexibility may be required.
