We’re seeking compassionate and qualified professionals to provide one-to-one specialist support for university students.
We offer support to students with a wide range of hearing levels.
This role is open to offer support to a non BSL user with partial hearing.
With future growth opportunity, for the right candidate, to expand to supporting further students.
Good understanding of the Welsh language is required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide tailored one-to-one support to students, enabling them to access course content and develop independent learning strategies.
- Facilitate understanding of carrier/subject language through appropriate communication strategies.
- Support assignment preparation, including breaking down briefs, modifying language, and helping with structure and presentation techniques.
- Assist with research and composition strategies, guiding students in accessing sources and organizing their ideas effectively.
- Help develop practical study skills, such as time management, organization, and communication.
- Advise academic staff, with the student’s permission, on inclusive teaching practices and adjustments that support accessibility.
Skills & Approach:
- Adapt support to the student’s individual communication style, educational background, and learning preferences.
- Encourage self-advocacy and independence, empowering students to navigate their academic journey confidently.
Qualifications Required: To deliver this role, professionals must hold one of the below: A deaf-related postgraduate qualification is required.
- Qualified Teacher of the Deaf, PGDip/MA/MSC in BSL/English Interpreting, MA/PhD in a deaf-related subject etc.
- Deaf Studies degree, CSW qualification, BSL Level 4 or above, BA (Hons) in Interpreting (British Sign Language and English) etc.
This role is not about teaching subject content—it’s about making that content accessible and helping students thrive academically.
Desirable Skills:
- Experience providing BSL/SSE Interpretation in educational setting
- Qualifications in MSI support and teaching
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to tailor strategies to individual learning styles
- Professionalism, punctuality, and confidentiality
- Caseload management and accurate record-keeping
