Salary: Up to £47,000 with a total package up to £61,000 (Annual Bonus, Company Car/allowance) plus pension.

Location: Home based with 3 days travel to Veolia sites.

What the role involves

As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will deliver conceptual and detailed design for energy systems including District Heating Networks, Energy Centres, HVAC, LTHW, Chilled Water, Heat Pumps (Air/Water/Geothermal Source), Low Carbon Heat Networks, Steam, and CHP. The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will conduct energy audits and surveys to identify Energy Conservation Measures (ECM), assess existing systems, and recommend efficiency interventions to achieve net zero targets.

Responsibilities

  • Lead multidisciplinary engineering teams, owning mechanical design elements including P&IDs for energy centres, sizing boilers, pumps, and components while coordinating electrical/control, process, and civil integration.
  • Act as Technical Lead for Business Development opportunities from pre-qualification through concept design, internal approval, proposal submission, and construction handover.
  • Lead client presentations showcasing capabilities and solutions, addressing specific design challenges throughout the development process.
  • Prepare tender packages for outline designs, collaborating with construction teams on programmes, resourcing, procurement strategies, and risk identification/mitigation.
  • Support Go/NoGo process by rapidly assessing technical and commercial viability, making formal recommendations as required.
  • Develop energy generation, efficiency, and distribution solutions with clients to deliver resilience, carbon reduction, and cost savings across project lifecycles.
  • Build supplier relationships to develop technical solutions, prepare quotations, and challenge scope, costs, timelines, and safety records.
  • Identify and manage development project risks, working with Supply Chain and Legal to ensure back-to-back risk transfer with partners.
  • Drive innovation to create differentiators in offerings while ensuring technical and commercial due diligence on new technologies.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and innovation.

Qualifications

  • Educated to degree level within Mechanical Engineering
  • Experience designing energy systems
  • Experience working within the energy industry
  • Strong organisational and time management skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of fostering teamwork and engaging constructively with clients
  • Familiarity with large-scale thermal generating plants such as large shell & tube boilers and CHP engines is essential
  • Experience with Heat Pump systems and renewables
  • AutoCAD experience
  • UK Driving Licence
