The CAMHS Advanced Nurse Practitioners work within the Prescribing Team here at Buxton CAMHS. They contribute to the delivery of outstanding patient care by exercising advanced clinical expertise, judgement, discretion and decision‑making in clinical care. They use highly developed specialist knowledge and skills working autonomously to complete clinical assessments, interpret clinical information, diagnose, formulate complex treatment plans and evaluate care and treatment. They are high‑profile, accessible and responsive leaders who demonstrate critical thinking in decision‑making within CAMHS.
They take responsibility for evidence‑based practice and add to the body of knowledge that supports the speciality CAMHS nursing practice on a local and national level. They lead strategic planning, service objectives and operational developments of the service, collaborating with others; lead and participate in research and audit activity, and promote service and clinical excellence through innovations, audits and research. They develop and deliver specialist educational strategies for all disciplines internally and externally, analysing ongoing training needs.
They are advanced skilled practitioners who provide specialist mental health services to children, adolescents and families in North Derbyshire, plan and manage therapeutic interventions, coordinate teaching for students and offer specialist advice and consultation to professionals involved in the care of children and adolescents.
Responsibilities – Clinical- Have autonomous responsibility for the case management of a varied caseload, including children and young people with severe and complex needs.
- Provide expert assessment for those young people who meet the service criteria for the specialist mental health service.
- Utilise a case‑management model to undertake highly specialised assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of treatment.
- Deliver highly skilled therapeutic interventions with individuals, families and groups, drawing upon evidence‑based practice, specialist training and knowledge and utilising NICE guidelines.
- Participate in regular clinical and managerial supervision and provide specialist supervision to colleagues.
- Collaborate with the young person and their families/carers to draw up clinical treatment plans.
- Maintain accurate communication and liaison with colleagues, referrers, primary care and external agencies.
- Possess a high level of knowledge of child protection, mental health, child health and legislation as it applies to children and young people and incorporate this knowledge in clinical practice.
- Attend and contribute to statutory child protection conferences and risk‑strategy meetings, providing specialist knowledge of developmental, emotional, behavioural and mental health perspectives.
- Communicate with young people, children and their families in a way that empowers them towards informed decision‑making.
- Monitor the physical and mental health of children on medication for complex conditions, such as ADHD, and make clinical decisions accordingly.
- Involve in personal and professional development and stay abreast of clinical developments within the specialty.
- Maintain registration with the NMC and adhere to the code of professional conduct.
- Promote and develop specialist nursing policies within CAMHS.
- Undertake urgent and emergency mental health assessment as necessary.
- Autonomously make clinical decisions within the context of assessments and work with families to identify appropriate treatment interventions.
- Promote a wider understanding of young people’s mental health issues among referrers, other professionals and the wider community.
- Observe confidentiality as appropriate in all matters relating to clients’ affairs and treatment.
- Keep accurate records to review and evaluate CAMHS provision on a regular basis.
- Provide non‑medical supplementary/independent prescribing to young people who are part of the caseload.
- Prescribe controlled drugs and POMs safely, acknowledging own limitations and scope of practice and adhering to the latest legislation.
- Participate in non‑medical prescribing supervision with a nominated consultant child & adolescent psychiatrist.
- Maintain high standards of prescribing practice through continuing professional development and ensuring that non‑medical prescribing is prioritised in formal development reviews.
- Prescribe medication within the clinical boundaries of child and adolescent mental health, using a formal clinical management plan aligned with Department of Health guidelines.
- Actively engage in the reviews of the non‑medical prescribing role and report any benefits or drawbacks to the CAMHS Clinical Leadership Team.
- Work within the legal and ethical frameworks of prescribing for young people and uphold the standards of prescribing practice enforced by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
- Communicate effectively with children, adolescents, carers and staff across the health community to maximise client outcomes.
- Use communication skills of persuasion, motivation and explanation to encourage behaviour change where there may be resistance.
- Use different methods of communicating where there may be barriers to effective communication.
- Manage and communicate complex, sensitive and potentially contentious information using interpersonal skills requiring empathy and reassurance.
- Actively involve in the implementation and development of quality governance.
- Collate and interpret quantitative and qualitative data to provide evidence of productivity, outcomes and quality of care.
- Lead and participate in clinical audit and research.
- Maintain an up‑to‑date professional portfolio and demonstrate a commitment to CPD.
- Take a lead role in the development of CAMHS nursing practice, including training, audit and maintaining professional standards.
- Provide support and participate in the training of student nurses.
- Accurately collect relevant activity data required for service monitoring, management and evaluation.
- Plan, prioritise and organise effectively and efficiently to deliver patient care and other service demands.
- Offer flexibility with respect to service delivery based on the needs of the clients.
- Develop proposals and business cases for future service development/innovation and provide reports as appropriate to commissioners.
- Lead on the development of strategic planning, service objectives and operational developments relating to the service.
- Develop relationships with patient support groups and ensure effective support networks.
- Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with key stakeholders and develop a national nursing profile relating to the speciality.
- Work with and alongside local and national networks and partnerships, promoting and disseminating evidence of service development.
- Lead on the development and implementation of speciality‑specific policy, guidelines and protocols in conjunction with the Clinical Lead.
- Facilitate change internally and externally, ensuring patient and carer involvement throughout the process.
- Act as a role model, providing leadership for nursing within CAMHS.
- Provide clinical supervision both within and outside the Trust to support the development of individuals and practice.
- Lead investigations and reporting of incidents, complaints and concerns raised relating to the service, ensuring appropriate action is taken.
- Be familiar with relevant operational, personnel, health and safety policies and procedures, including Fire, COSHH, No Smoking and Alcohol.
- Deal with incidents appropriately and in accordance with Trust policy.
