Helping others improve and turn their lives around is the best feeling. We provide CAMHS Tier 4 PICU, General Acute and Low Secure services across four wards with a defined treatment pathway from admission through to intervention and discharge, including rapid assessment and treatment.

We are seeking an experienced full‑time CAMHS Consultant Psychiatrist and Medical Director who will work at Cygnet Hospital Bury Forestwood and provide senior medical cover on Buttercup ward, our 8‑bed PICU service for young people aged 12‑18 with severe mental illness.

The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician for Buttercup ward and the Medical Director for Cygnet Bury Forestwood. The role comprises 0.2 WTE as Medical Director and 0.8 WTE as Consultant Psychiatrist.

In this role you will drive life‑changing treatment, supported by a Specialty Doctor and multidisciplinary team including nurses, psychologists and occupational therapists.

Main duties and responsibilities

As Medical Director:

  • Ensure optimal clinical outcomes for patients in care.
  • Lead all aspects of clinical practice and demonstrate operational excellence.
  • Provide leadership for medical staff on professional and managerial issues and monitor performance.
  • Supervise consultants and ensure supervisors are supervising junior staff.
  • Offer expert knowledge and support within the service and to the wider team.
  • Ensure quality and compliance with internal and external standards and regulations.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to provide integrated, whole‑person treatment and care.
  • Coach, mentor and train colleagues.
  • Maintain regular communication and meetings with medical staff.
  • Assist in recruitment and retention of medical staff to provide a high‑quality clinical service.
  • Ensure medical staff involvement in hospital clinical governance.
  • Lead on successful implementation of CQC outcomes for 4, 7 and 9.
  • Chair medical advisory committee meetings and attend Cygnet Medical Directors meetings.
  • Liaise with Responsible Officer and Regional Medical Director regarding concerns about fitness to practice issues for staff.

As Consultant Psychiatrist:

  • Lead on provision of high‑quality care to service users admitted to Buttercup Ward.
  • Act as a positive role model with a positive attitude towards patients, families, visitors and staff.
  • Take overall responsibility for patient treatment plans with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Assess referrals and undertake mental state examinations.
  • Conduct investigations, diagnosis and treatment.
  • Conduct ward rounds, patient reviews and clinical audits.
  • Implement risk assessment and risk management, embedding clinical governance.
  • Supervise reports for Mental Health Act tribunals and managerial hearings, and attend hearings.
  • Liaise with the Ministry of Justice for patient transfer and leave approvals.
  • Maintain patient records and communicate effectively with staff, directors and other concerned bodies.

Qualifications and experience

  • Fully GMC‑registered & MBBS (or equivalent) qualified.
  • Registered on the specialist register (CCT/CESR), Section 12 and AC Status.
  • Experienced and knowledgeable in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
  • Knowledgeable of the Mental Health Act, Code of Practice, Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Code of Capacity.
  • First‑rate communicator capable of interviewing, assessing and treating patients and writing clear, comprehensive medical notes.
  • Committed to continued professional development.
  • Able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) or equivalent.
