Applications are invited from motivated and enthusiastic HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists who are looking to progress their careers in Clinical Biochemistry. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work within the Blood Sciences Department in state‑of‑the‑art laboratories on the Southmead site. The redeveloped Southmead site opened in May 2014 and is one of Europe’s leading hospitals. The department provides a routine Biochemistry testing service to all inpatient, outpatient and GP surgeries in the North Bristol area, with a workload of over 1 million specimen requests per annum.

The Clinical Biochemistry department offers an extensive range of diagnostic and clinical services, including:

  • Integrated Blood Sciences Automated Laboratory
  • Toxicology
  • Metabolic Biochemistry
  • Antenatal and Newborn Screening
  • Point of Care Testing services

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to rotate throughout the department and will be expected to participate in the department’s 24‑7 service. The post holder under the direction of senior staff will be expected to:

  • Work as part of a team to provide routine and specialist diagnostic laboratory service in Clinical Biochemistry in accordance with national, Trust and departmental policies and procedures on a rotational basis in all sections of the laboratory.
  • Participate in the training and development of other staff within the department.
  • Contribute to the development of services provided to meet the requirements of users.
  • Work in accordance with the Departmental Standard Operating Procedures and assist in the development and review of these as required.
  • Receive and analyse samples submitted to the department in accordance with laboratory policies and protocols.
  • Assist in the interpretation and technical validation of the analyses in accordance with laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Be responsible for the provision of our service to patients in routine and emergency situations.
  • Rotate into any area of the department as required.
  • Participate fully in the department’s 24/7 rota service.
  • Prioritise the completion of urgent requests.
  • Telephone important results to an appropriate person when necessary.
  • Be responsible for their own work under the supervision of senior laboratory staff.
  • Validate and release results to service users as required.
  • Maintain a high level of professional competence in the performance of all tests and investigations carried out in the department as appropriate.
  • Prepare and ensure adequate supplies of reagents and consumables.
  • Use consumables and equipment efficiently and safely in accordance with Health & Safety policies.
  • Perform the routine maintenance and cleaning of the equipment with which they are working including maintenance records and recording of corrective actions.
  • Process internal and external quality control samples and results/reports as required.
  • Participate in quality assurance procedures in accordance with the laboratory quality manual.
  • Participate in risk management of the department including the reporting of adverse incidents.
  • Assist in research and development projects as required.
  • Assist in the training and teaching of trainee biomedical scientists, new BMS staff, MLA’s, medical staff and other healthcare professionals as required.
  • Participate in staff appraisal according to Trust policies and procedures.
  • Undertake continued professional development.
  • Be personally responsible for maintaining HCPC Registration.
  • Participate in all other activities in the section to enable the department to maintain compliance with ISO15189 (2022).
  • Provide appropriate cover for more senior Biomedical Scientist staff as required.
