Registered MS Treatment Nurse | North Bristol NHS Trust

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Bristol and Avon MS (BrAMS) Specialist Team. BrAMS offers a unique service, providing support, information, clinical treatment, therapy, and research to people across Bristol and the South West.

The unit offers:

• Expert clinical knowledge in multiple sclerosis and associated neurological conditions.
• A dedicated specialist MS nurse team offering a range of specialist nurse-led clinics, a telephone helpline service, and invaluable support to MS patients, their families, and carers.
• A specialist physiotherapist service offering instant access to information, treatment, exercise, and balance rehabilitation.
• An intravenous suite allowing access to daycase IV steroids, which are often used to treat patients in times of relapse or those with severe spasticity.

The postholder will work within the Bristol and Avon MS specialist team in the day case unit delivering prescribed MS treatments. These treatments may involve products that are handled as Cytotoxic in nature. The postholder will take personal responsibility and accountability for ensuring that The Trust and local policies and procedures are known and followed and will ensure duties are carried out with the advisory guidelines and practice set out in the NMC Professional code of conduct.

The postholder will be responsible for assessment, planning, provision, maintenance, and evaluation of patient care within the department. They will take responsibility for the supervision and guidance of other staff including Assistant Practitioners, healthcare support workers, and students on a daily basis. The postholder will actively contribute to the provision of a good learning environment by taking on the role of mentor/assessor for learners e.g. student nurses and support worker roles.

Ability to provide verbal reports and maintain written reports on the patient's condition for nurses and the wider multidisciplinary team. Ability to use electronic systems to record patient information. Undertake aspects of administration as agreed by the ward/department manager. Ability to build good relationships with patients, relatives, and colleagues by developing rapport, communicating clearly and accurately, active listening, and the ability to empathise. Ability to work as part of a team. Ability to liaise effectively with other disciplines or departments.

Responsible for ensuring that patients are always treated with courtesy, that individual needs are respected, and confidentiality is always maintained. Ability to prioritise workload and delegate appropriately to registered nurses, health care assistants, and students to ensure efficient delivery of care to meet the needs of patients. Responsible for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of individualised care without direct supervision in accordance with nursing policies and procedures and within your own scope of practice.

Responsible for the admission, assessment, and preparation of patients undergoing treatment or investigation. Organisational skills for the co-ordination and provision of care needs of patients using initiative, time management, leadership, and problem-solving skills. Responsible for reporting to the appropriate members of the multidisciplinary team any significant changes in a patient’s condition or situation.

Ensure the safe ordering, administration, and custody of patient’s medication according to trust policies and procedures. Ensure safe storage and disposal of substances hazardous to health in accordance with Trust policy. Responsible for reporting all complaints, incidents, or accidents involving self, staff, patients, visitors and complete relevant documentation according to Trust procedure. Responsible for reporting and documenting any broken or damaged equipment according to Trust policy.

Responsible for reporting any episodes of sickness for self or that reported to you by another member of nursing staff to ensure skill mix is maintained. In the absence of senior staff, be responsible for the delegation and supervision of appropriate work to other qualified staff, health care assistants, and students. Have an awareness of safe staffing for the department.

Demonstrate teaching and presentation skills to promote an effective learning environment for students and other members of the MDT. Contribute towards health promotion for all patients by providing education, support, and advice as necessary. Ability to respond to an emergency including fire and resuscitation. Support and direct junior staff in such situations according to Trust policy. Responsible for professional development and ensuring mandatory training is up to date.
