Specialised expertise in the analysis and assessment of pharmaceutical and related products to ensure product quality for clinical use. Analysis covers chemical, physical and microbial techniques. The role supports Quality Assurance principles affecting medicines safety.
Responsibilities
- Report any deviations from documented procedures.
- Raise corrective and preventive actions as necessary.
- Carry out actions as required for quality issues.
- Write and review documented procedures (directed by Laboratory Manager).
- Assist colleagues and participate in training as necessary.
- Train and supervise others (directed by Laboratory Manager).
- Demonstrate work activities to interested parties.
- Attend and take an active part in departmental meetings.
- Plan and organise personal workload to meet department needs.
- Request stock orders as necessary.
- Be aware of health & safety issues and comply with guidance.
- Maintain awareness of GLP and participate in staff appraisal scheme.
- Attend lectures and courses as requested.
Additional responsibilities include providing accurate, reliable results from chemical, physical and microbiological analyses; completing project work to timescales; developing and validating analytical methods; staff training; performing formulation and stability studies; report writing; keeping knowledge up to date; off-site analysis as required (e.g., environmental monitoring and medical gas testing); contributing to regulatory compliance through QA tasks; deviation reporting; root cause investigation; CAPA and change control planning; internal audits and audit reporting; developing and writing standard analytical procedures.
Process leadership and team duties
The QC Analyst role includes being a process leader for a limited number of analytical areas, covering queries, training, routine audits (including competency assessment) and nonconformities, with familiarity of relevant regulations and area compliance and risk. Plan or participate in actions to correct failings or improve the area. Take part in constant improvement to ensure safe and compliant operations.

QC Analyst tasks (Band 5) The following is a list of QC analyst tasks. It may be adjusted as appropriate with agreement. A Band 5 analyst should carry out the majority of routine analysis and R&D projects with minimal supervision/guidance.
- Carry out routine analysis according to documented procedures.

- Monitor and calibrate laboratory equipment according to internal programme.
- Plan and organise personal workload to meet department needs.
- Prepare reagents as necessary.
- Maintain laboratory in clean and tidy condition.
- Carry out routine environmental monitoring of aseptic suite as required.
- Provide support and cover for sample management (booking in samples, unpacking and storage, routine monitoring checks, disposal of samples and reagents, and generating certificates of analysis).
- Take minutes at meetings and support process leadership tasks.
