Responsibilities

  • Move patients, consumable products, waste, furniture, medical equipment, gasses, beds, mattresses etc within the hospital environment.
  • Clean portering equipment and deliver blood products.
  • Respond to major incidents and deliver emergency blood products.
  • Allocate jobs to peers on a "next person" basis to ensure fairness.
  • Communicate with the public, staff and peers as required.
  • Record staff levels, check in sheets and sign off paperwork.
  • Produce and complete blood track forms (pink slip) from the Synbiotix system.
  • Ensure safe storage and handling of equipment and chemicals.

Knowledge

  • Understanding of portering activities and processes.
  • Knowledge of Department and Trust health and safety policies, safe systems of work and procedures.
  • Knowledge of pathology procedures for blood product movement.
  • Familiarity with Synbiotix portering system.

Training / Qualifications

  • Customer and support services or equivalent experience to an NVQ Level 2.
  • Mandatory training as required for the role.
  • Trust, Patient Support/Directorate Services induction training.
  • On‑job induction training.
  • Full, clean UK driving licence required.

Experience

  • Working in a busy, multi‑faceted, team‑based environment.

Physical Effort

  • Standing and walking for long periods during a shift.
  • Moving cages of up to approximately 300 kg when required.

Mental Effort

  • Awareness of health and safety implications and their effect on others.
  • Maintaining confidentiality and professional distance from patients.
  • Working to schedules that may change.

Emotional Effort

  • Cope with witnessing distressing sights of very ill or end‑stage patients.
  • Dealing with traumatic injuries in the emergency department.
  • Interact sensitively with patients and members of the public in high‑stress situations.

Working Conditions

  • Professional image and clean uniform at all times.
  • Wear low‑heeled footwear; comply with policies on jewellery, nail polish, etc.
  • Act courteously to all staff, visitors and patients.
  • Work bank holidays when required.

  • Work within areas subject to extreme weather conditions.

Education / Training / Qualifications

  • English and Maths GCSE.
  • Good verbal communication skills.
  • Full clean driving licence.
