This is a consultant post in Infection (microbiology or microbiology and infectious diseases) based at Southmead Hospital, North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) within Severn Infection Sciences (SIS). The successful candidate will support clinical microbiology services at Weston General Hospital (WGH) and deliver six Postgraduate Annual Review Plans. The role includes an out‑of‑hours on‑call commitment of 1:8 with inclusive cover across NBT and WGH.
North Bristol NHS Trust and University Hospitals Bristol and Weston (UHBW) are forming a merged Hospital Group. The postholder will take part in the merger’s cross‑site clinical microbiology and infection prevention & control services, participating fully in the unified department across all sites.
Responsibilities- Deliver a proactive clinical infection service, sharing continuous responsibility for patient care in liaison with consultant colleagues.
- Participate in the out‑of‑hours service for NBT and WGH on a 1:8 inclusive cover on‑call rota.
- Provide a comprehensive, efficient and cost‑effective clinical microbiology and infection prevention & control service to NBT and UHBW within Severn Infection Sciences.
- Work with local and regional health protection teams to support medical microbiology/public health and surveillance duties, including outbreak or incident management and acute public health response.
- Supervise laboratory diagnostic methods, examine specimens, authorize and interpret results on a day‑to‑day basis.
- Contribute to quality assurance, national external quality assurance programmes (NEQAS) and maintain full accreditation with UKAS or an equivalent agency.
- Participate in medical IQA and governance meetings as required.
- Attend ward rounds, clinical meetings, multidisciplinary meetings/clinics and supervise specialty trainees.
- Liaise and advise trust clinical staff, medical microbiologists, GPs and health protection consultants regarding diagnosis, management and infection control.
- Provide prospective cover for other consultant colleagues during leave and reciprocate cover as required.
- Engage in policy development and construction for the Trust as needed.
- Engage in cross‑site working across all sites served by the merged organisation, fully supporting merger objectives.
Hold a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of achieving it at the date of interview, or be listed on the GMC’s specialist register. CESR applicants are welcome and must have their CESR in place at the time of interview.
