The postholder will work as a senior, non‑training grade doctor within the Psychiatry service, providing high‑quality assessment, treatment, and ongoing management of patients with mental health needs. The role involves close collaboration with the multidisciplinary team and consultant psychiatrists to ensure safe, effective, and patient‑centred care across inpatient, community, and crisis settings. A Section 12(2) Mental Health Act approval is highly desirable. Candidates without current approval will be supported to obtain it.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Clinical Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments, including mental state examinations and risk assessments.
- Formulate management plans and deliver evidence‑based treatment under consultant supervision.
- Participate in ward rounds, MDT meetings, and care planning reviews.
- Provide clinical leadership to junior medical staff and contribute to teaching and supervision.
- Undertake urgent assessments, including Mental Health Act assessments (if Section 12 approved).
- Contribute to crisis management, gatekeeping assessments, and liaison with acute hospitals or community teams.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and legally compliant clinical documentation.
- Section 12 Responsibilities
- Participate in Mental Health Act assessments as a Section 12‑approved doctor.
- Provide expert opinion on detention, treatment, and risk under the MHA.
- Work collaboratively with AMHPs, police, and emergency services during MHA processes.
- Ensure practice aligns with the Code of Practice and Trust policies.
- Non‑Clinical Responsibilities
- Participate in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Engage in CPD activities and maintain a professional portfolio.
- Contribute to service development and innovation within the department.
- Attend mandatory training and maintain revalidation requirements.
- Support teaching for medical students, trainees, and MDT colleagues.
Person Specification
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
- Full GMC registration with licence to practise.
- Minimum 4 years post‑graduate experience, including at least 2 years in Psychiatry.
- Strong clinical skills in assessment and management of psychiatric conditions.
- Ability to work effectively within an MDT.
- Excellent communication and documentation skills.
- MRCPsych or equivalent experience.
- Experience in more than one psychiatric sub‑specialty.
- Experience in teaching, audit, or QI.
