Neway International are seeking a Social Work Assistant to join our client based with Birmingham Children’s Trust.

Location: Lifford House, Birmingham

Hours: 36.5 per week

This is a varied and active Social Work Assistant position requiring regular travel across Birmingham. You will support Social Workers in delivering direct work with children and families, contributing to assessments, and ensuring children’s needs are met in a safe and timely manner. The role involves a blend of planned visits, family support tasks, and supervised contact, with flexibility required to accommodate after‑school sessions and occasional later finishes.

Responsibilities:

  • Carry out direct work with children and parents, including life story work, pathway planning, and family support tasks.
  • Visit children placed across the city and maintain accurate records of all interactions.
  • Transport children safely to and from family time, appointments, and other agreed activities.
  • Supervise contact between children and their parents/family members.
  • Support Social Workers with information gathering and practical tasks as part of ongoing casework.
  • Participate in the duty/back‑up duty rota (approximately once per week), remaining available for calls and responding to unforeseen situations where required.
  • Work flexibly, with some days extending beyond 5.30–6pm depending on transport needs.

Qualifications:

  • A full and clean driving licence including the PCV element (Essential).
  • A good standard of general education with strong applied literacy and numeracy skills (Essential).
  • Experience working with children, young people, or families in a support capacity.
  • Ability to manage a varied caseload and work independently across the city.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build rapport with children of all ages.
  • Resilience, reliability, and a commitment to safeguarding and professional boundaries.
  • Willingness to work flexibly, including occasional later finishes.
