We are seeking a compassionate and organised Healthcare Assistant to join our Pre-Operative Assessment team. In this role, you will support patients preparing for surgery by assisting with clinical observations, documentation, and patient preparation, ensuring they are safely and thoroughly assessed prior to their procedure.
Working closely with registered nurses and clinicians, you will help ensure patients are medically optimised, well-informed, and supported throughout their pre-operative journey. Successful candidates will be appointed at Band 2 and will progress to Band 3 upon successful completion of the required training and competencies. Candidates who have already completed the relevant training and can demonstrate the required competencies may be appointed directly at Band 3.
Main Duties
- Assist in preparing patients for pre-operative assessment clinics
- Record baseline observations (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, height, weight, BMI)
- Perform basic clinical tasks such as ECG recording, venepuncture (if trained), and urine testing
- Accurately document patient information in electronic or paper records
- Ensure all required paperwork and investigation results are available and correctly filed
- Prepare clinic rooms and equipment, ensuring cleanliness and infection control standards are maintained
- Chaperone during examinations where required
- Provide patients with clear instructions regarding pre-operative preparations (e.g., fasting guidance, swabs, questionnaires) as directed by nursing staff
- Identify and escalate any abnormal observations or patient concerns to the registered nurse or clinician
- Support smooth patient flow within the clinic
- Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to safeguarding policies
- Participate in training, supervision, and ongoing professional development

JOB SUMMARY
The Health Care Assistant (HCA) will undertake high quality, caring and compassionate personal care and associated duties under the direction and supervision of registered professionals working as part of a multi-disciplinary health and care team. The post holder will:
- Participate in the delivery of personal patient centred care, always maintaining a compassionate and professional attitude with patients, their families and carers.
- Contribute to the service/team organisation.
- Support registered nurses/nursing associates and Allied Health Care professionals (AHP’s) in the provision of a caring and safe environment.
- Record patient observations and changes to patient’s clinical condition and carry out limited clinical care duties.
This post is suitable for people who have experience as a health care support worker/clinical support worker. The post holder will work shift patterns associated with the team/service/site where the post is offered.
