Responsibilities:
- You will be expected to liaise with the wider system across health, education and social care to offer the best possible support to families of children with suspected ASD & ADHD.
- The post holder will be part of the neurodevelopmental pathway team aimed at improving the care of children with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD) across the city, both pre and post diagnosis.
- The nurse‑led service demands skills in child and family‑centred care, with experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team alongside medical and other health, educational and voluntary services.
- Work closely with the members of the neurodevelopmental pathway team in developing, implementing, and monitoring services provided to children, young people and their families.
- Be a key member of the ADHD multidisciplinary team, working collaboratively with Consultant Paediatricians and other health professionals.
- Work autonomously across Birmingham, taking the lead in preliminary assessments of new referrals using the agreed assessment tools and analysing the resulting information.
- Undertake and record observations within schools, clinics, and home settings.
- Act as an Advanced Nurse Prescriber for ADHD related medicines, in line with NMC, NICE and national guidelines around safe prescribing.
- Implement a family‑centred care approach, capturing the voice of the child and promoting involvement in the decision‑making process.
- Provide comprehensive inclusive and expert assessment of children referred with symptoms and comorbidities, based upon appropriate use, interpretation, and integration of complex data from a variety of sources.
- Be the first point of contact for queries, giving advice and signposting to outside agencies on a rota basis.
- Work with and liaise with parents and carers to resolve any complaints or concerns at the local level before escalating to team leader.
- Prescribe effectively and safely under a Clinical Management Plan, acknowledging own limitations and scope of practice.
- Maintain relevant pharmaceutical knowledge, critically appraise, and apply information in practice.
- Participate in audit and review of prescribing practice and medicines management using the National Prescribing Centre Competency framework.
- Work with children and parents/carers to encourage uptake of medication and behaviour management programmes using varied communication strategies.
- Provide direct expert nursing judgement and treatment interventions based on highly developed skills and knowledge of clinical management and educational management of children and young people with ADHD.
- Work closely with families, schools, and other agencies, using negotiation skills to encourage implementation of behaviour management programmes.
- Liaise with external services such as CAMHS, Social Care and Health and education to provide a holistic approach to care.
- Work with the ADHD team lead in the design, development, and implementation of a rolling programme of parent education, delivered both in groups and individually.
- Deliver complex information using a range of training approaches and communication styles to meet individual needs and overcome barriers to understanding.
- Undertake risk assessments and risk management for individual children, young people and families in accordance with clinical harms criteria.
- Use a range of computer programmes to analyse assessment tools and ensure patient administration systems are maintained and used proficiently across the team.
- Effectively manage ongoing care of children diagnosed with ADHD, and continue the collection of activity and outcomes as part of clinical governance.
- Be aware of child protection policies and take appropriate action where concerns are identified.
- Coordinate patient transition from team caseload to adult ADHD services, ensuring continuity of care.
- Develop excellent working relationships with all parties involved to achieve effective communication.
- Work within scope of practice and competencies to meet caseload/service user/community needs.
- Maintain contemporaneous clinical records in line with NMC guidelines and the trust Clinical Records Policy.
- Ensure that you and junior staff within the team have access to regular child protection supervision.
Management and Leadership Responsibilities:
- Provide clinical leadership, consultation, support, and supervision to other members of the ADHD service and the wider multidisciplinary team.
- Influence and contribute to the delivery of clinical governance and quality improvement agenda within the service.
- Represent the team at multi‑agency or professional meetings as required and to participate in case conferences where appropriate.
- Participate in regular audit of the service and research projects to promote evidence‑based practice.
- Assist in the induction programme for new staff as a mentor, ensuring new staff are aware of the role.
- Contribute to review and implementation of trust policies and procedures related to the ADHD service.
- Escalate operational or staffing concerns to Team Leader, Operational Manager or Head of Service.
Educational and Development:
- Maintain professional registration, including NMC revalidation, and keep up to date with mandatory training.
- Access regular clinical supervision from a medical mentor.
- Engage in continuing professional development opportunities relevant to the non‑medical prescribing role.
- Develop clinical expertise in ADHD, supporting the team and advancing practice.
- Identify own learning needs and pursue continuing professional development accordingly.
- Update professional knowledge and skills in practice areas.
- Undertake mandatory training in line with trust policy and attend updates and study days as required.
