The Production Laboratory is a support service that provides custom‐made dental appliances across a number of clinical services including restorative, paediatrics, oncology/cleft oral surgery. We are a busy service and can produce between 2,500 and 3,500 units of work across the prosthetic, orthodontic and crown and bridges sections of the laboratory. We support dental core trainees (DCTs) as well as registrars and consultants, and undergraduate dental students from year 3 to year 5.

The post holder will be responsible for the design, planning and construction of precision custom‐made, complete and partial removable appliances, overdentures, immediate restoration appliances, training plates and myofunctional splints. The post holder will be able to produce a range of full and partial prosthetic dental appliances from start to finish and will have a good all‐round knowledge of appliance design and construction to support the undergraduate students as well as the wider clinical team.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Plan, design and construct custom‐made removable prosthetic appliances using semi‐adjustable articulators.
  • Evaluate the quality of the dental prescription and items supplied by the clinical areas to ensure they are of sufficient quality to proceed with construction of the appliance.
  • Plan, coordinate and prioritise daily workload to meet laboratory deadlines and service requirements, and bring any areas of concern to the attention of the laboratory manager.
  • Provide emergency service and repairs for patients.
  • Demonstrate and discuss techniques with undergraduates, clinicians, dental nurses and visitors when required, and advise on the selection of materials and the correct and safe use of equipment within the laboratory.
  • Produce a high‐quality standard of work as stated in the Laboratory Operational Guideline Procedures.
  • Use the laboratory dedicated computer system to book finished appliances and deal with enquiries when required.
  • Utilise various specialised pieces of machinery within the laboratory, including compressed gases, ultraviolet lights, grit blasting, heating tanks and pressure forming equipment.
  • Undertake more complex work involving implant restorations and other highly complex work under supervision and further training.
  • Perform any other duties commensurate with the post, within their technical skills and agreement with the Laboratory Manager.
